Earlier this week, All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders. Adams, who’s in his third season with the Raiders, was acquired in 2022 to reunite with his old Fresno State quarterback, Derek Carr. The Carr and Adams reunion would only last one year after Carr was released after the 2022 season, he then signed with the New Orleans Saints.
Since Carr’s departure, Adams has caught passes from five different quarterbacks and the Raiders have failed to reach the playoffs in both seasons with him. When Antonio Pierce took over for Josh McDaniels last season, it seemed as if there was a new energy in the building and Adams was willing to give Pierce and the Raiders a chance to turn the tide. Through four weeks of the 2024 season, he’s ready for a clean slate and has requested a trade.
Although a trade isn’t guaranteed to happen it seems as if the Raiders are willing to compromise and are “considering” trading Adams for a second-round pick and an additional compensation pick. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, there have been rumors that the Dallas Cowboys would “love to add a talented wide receiver” at the trade deadline. When a six-time Pro Bowler who’s also a three-time First-Team All-Pro wide receiver is available for that asking price it should be a no-brainer to pounce. With that being said, do it Jerry! Trade for the game-changing wide receiver.
Trade For The All-Pro Wide Receiver, Do It Jerry!
“All-In”
Jerry Jones’ plan going into the 2024 offseason would be to go “All-in” to help the Cowboys overcome their Super Bowl drought. Jones has done the complete opposite and the lack of aggressiveness to acquire players has been fully displayed. The absence of running back production is the perfect example of the front office failing to address team needs but hopefully, they don’t make that same mistake twice.
Adams in a Cowboys uniform would instantly give the offense a much-needed boost especially since they’re in dire need of another play-maker. Dak Prescott ranks third in passing yards but the play from the pass catchers hasn’t been efficient enough for a Super Bowl-caliber team. CeeDee Lamb leads the team in all receiving categories and has a team-high 316 yards. After Lamb, only Jake Ferguson and Jalen Tolbert have double-digit receptions and more than 100 yards receiving.
Adams hasn’t had the best luck with quarterbacks this season and only has 18 receptions, 209 yards, and one touchdown in three games. However, hypothetically speaking if he was on the Cowboys roster that would make him the second-leading receiver in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Prescott has built a connection with Ferguson and Tolbert is gaining the quarterback’s trust as well. Throwing Adams in that mix would make the Cowboys offense lethal and their player-caller would love that, considering they’re very familiar with each other.
The Reunion
Mike McCarthy and Adams spent five seasons together in Green Bay before he was cut loose after a 4-7-1 start in 2018. Under McCarthy, Adams became a star and was a crucial part of the Packers success. He only had one 1,000-yard season but had three consecutive seasons with double-digit receiving touchdowns and earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2017.
Trading for Adams would be costly and draft capital would be given up to get a deal done. The Cowboys are sitting on $23.7 million in cap space but could probably restructure his contract and a few others on the roster to make things work. Truthfully, the second-round pick hasn’t been a hot commodity for Dallas. Only five of their last 10 second-round picks are still on the roster and one of those players has had trouble finding the field. That pick is worth giving up, especially for a guy who’s proven he’s still one of the best at his position.
Time is Ticking
Adams, who will turn 32 in December knows he’s on a ticking clock and mentioned on Netflix’s “Wide Receiver” that he’s getting older and doesn’t have much time to win a Super Bowl. Adams and the Cowboys are on the same trajectory as both hope to win a Super Bowl in the upcoming years.
Both Dallas and the Philadelphia Eagles have underachieved at this point in the season which has left the door open to win the division. If Jerry Jones is serious about his beloved Cowboys winning another Super Bowl he’ll pick up the phone, call Tom Telesco, and have a deal in place for Adams at his earliest convenience. The trade deadline is November 5th at 4:00 p.m., eastern time. More than likely Adams will be scooped up long before then, Jones needs to make that call ASAP.
