Well NBA fans, we are here. After reading my power rankings on the Western Conference hierarchy, it’s time to look at the Eastern Conference. This might be the first time that the East is the superior conference since the Michael Jordan era.
The East will be a bloodbath to compete for not only a playoff appearance, but to be the Eastern Conference champion. Last year, the East was represented by the New York Knicks, who won their first title in over 53 years. It feels more so, that their title defense will be much harder than ever before with more teams loading up. For example, the Philadelphia 76ers now have the latest NBA super team by acquiring LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
Another division rival, the Toronto Raptors also acquired 35-year-old superstar Kawhi Leonard in a trade from the Clippers where he will be returning to the team, where he led them to their sole franchise title back in 2019.
Another big move was the Miami Heat acquiring another superstar in Giannis Antetokounmpo to pair up with Bam Adebayo, hoping to lead South Beach to their first title since the Heatles era in 2013. Let’s not forget that the Atlantic Division is the most title-heavy contender division with four teams including the Raptors, Boston Celtics, Knicks, and 76ers all having title aspirations. There is a strong possibility of 11-12 teams that could be contending for at least a play-in spot.
Like the Western Conference article, I will predict which teams will finish over or under on their win lines from theScore. I will have my locks, which I am confident will happen. Let’s get into it!
NBA Eastern Conference Power Rankings
1. New York Knicks
Last season result: 53-29; NBA Champions
Regular season win line: 52.5
Prediction: Under
Yes, the Knicks are the defending champs and are coming off one of the dominant playoff runs in recent memory. Yes, the Knicks have a superstar and one of the best closers of all time in Jalen Brunson. However, this is also a starting lineup and roster that is getting older in age, and there is a good chance they will be on cruise control to get into the postseason.
The Eastern Conference, particularly their division, has gotten much deeper, which means wins will be harder to come by. The Knicks are returning their entire core minus Mitchell Robinson, and they’re the defending champs until they are dethroned.
2. Philadelphia 76ers
Last season result: 45-37; lost in Eastern Conference Semifinals to Knicks
Regular season win line: 50.5
Prediction: Over
On paper, the team with the biggest and best offseason should have no problem winning more than 50 games. After all, the 76ers, a season ago, won 45 games and even won a playoff series on top of that. Now the 76ers added the 41-year-old James for a bargain and traded Paul George for Brown, who had an MVP-like season last year. Could the 76ers struggle with gelling early on? Absolutely. Could they struggle with health? Of course.
It will be interesting to see how Brown and Tyrese Maxey will coexist in the backcourt. Also, what about the health of Joel Embiid? This team is all in to win their first title since 1983. Could another team end their long-awaited title drought?
3. Toronto Raptors
Last season result: 46-36; lost in First Round to Cavaliers
Regular season win line: 45.5
Prediction: Over (*LOCK)
This one is a lock in my opinion. How can a team that added one of the best two-way players when healthy, be worse or finish with fewer than 46 wins? This team also went 46-36 last season and took the Cavaliers to seven games. Toronto also had one of the best defenses in the league, led by rising star Scottie Barnes. Sure, Leonard’s health is always a risk, but even if he plays for 55 games, Toronto should be able to improve upon their record last year. Also, the East did improve drastically, but it shouldn’t be an issue for the Raptors to at least match their win total.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
Last season result: 52-30; lost in Eastern Conference Finals to Knicks
Regular season win line: 48.5
Prediction: Over (*LOCK)
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been one of the most talented teams in the East for the past couple of years. They did regress a bit in the regular season, and they managed to get their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 1992. The starting lineup remains one of the most stacked, with James Harden and Donovan Mitchell running the backcourt, along with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen taking up the front court.
They did lose some key pieces from their bench, but acquiring Peyton Watson provides them with athleticism on the front court. This team also struggled with injuries last year and still won 52 games. I think getting 49 wins is very doable and a lock. Perhaps could even finish first in the conference.
5. Detroit Pistons
Last season result: 60-22; lost in Eastern Conference Semifinals to Cavaliers
Regular season win line: 50.5
Prediction: Over (Barely)
If the line was any higher, I would have taken the under here. This one is probably one of the ones I have the least amount of confidence in. For starters, do I think the Detroit Pistons will drop over 10 wins? No, this team is bringing back their main core with some changes to their role players. However, I don’t believe Detroit will dominate the conference like they did last year.
The Eastern Conference got deeper, and wins will be harder to come by for a young Pistons team. At least Jalen Duren finally agreed to an extension. Detroit should be a lock for 50 wins next season. However, running away with the top seed like last season will not happen and since the Pistons didn’t do enough to improve, regression in the regular season is very likely.
6. Miami Heat
Last season result: 43-39; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 46.5
Prediction: Over
The Heat landed their superstar in Antetokounmpo, and that frontcourt is going to be lethal with him and Adebayo. However, outside this duo, the depth of this team is relatively thin and old. This isn’t a super confident lock because Giannis is coming off a season where he only played 36 games, and he will be 32 in December.
Nevertheless, Giannis is still a top five player in the NBA when healthy and definitely will raise the ceiling of this team. At least Erik Spoelstra is still the head coach, and the Heat front office has been known to turn unknown players into solid role players.
7. Boston Celtics
Last season result: 56-26; lost in First Round to 76ers
Regular season win line: 51.5
Prediction: Under
Yes, this is the Celtics, and this is a team that overachieved last season to the 2nd seed. However, the biggest move they made was trading Brown, who was in the MVP race all of last season. Can Jayson Tatum return to pre-Achilles injury form and become that official top option? Also, can George have a bounce-back season after two down years in Philly?
The signings of Mike Conley Jr and Robinson were solid and should help the Celtics improve their depth. Did Boston do enough to stay in the top four of their conference? In my opinion, they are probably the fourth best team in their own division.
8. Orlando Magic
Last season result: 45-37; lost in First Round to Pistons
Regular season win line: 43.5
Prediction: Over
This Orlando Magic team is too talented to miss this line. This is a team that struggled last year with injuries and also questionable fit as well between their stars Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Desmond Bane. The Magic also regressed defensively, dropping to 12th in defensive efficiency. Maybe a new head coach in Sean Sweeney can get the most out of this team that was expected to be a dark horse contender in the Eastern Conference. Expect some changes to occur if Orlando underachieves once again.
9. Indiana Pacers
Last season result: 19-63; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 44.5
Prediction: Under
This prediction is one I have low confidence in. Yes, Tyrese Haliburton will be taking the court for the first time since Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, and the team was a half away from being the champs. However, Tyrese hasn’t played an NBA game in 16 months, and expecting him to be back to his pre-injury form right away is a tall task. Despite missing out on their lottery pick this past year due to the Ivica Zubac trade, Zubac will fill the void of Myles Turner and give the Indiana Pacers a center who is a double-double machine and is good in the pick-and-roll.
However, this is a team that won 50 games two years ago in a weaker conference, and it is hard to believe they are in the top six of the East currently. The Pacers should at least double their win total from last year and are expected to be a low- to mid-40-win team this year. The line is really that good.
10. Atlanta Hawks
Last season result: 46-36; lost in First Round to Knicks
Regular season win line: 43.5
Prediction: Under
This team has a lot of length, versatility, and defense that will give opposing offenses on many nights. So why are they ranked 10th and under 44 wins? They have a higher floor, but they don’t have the star power to compete with the other nine teams above them in the East, which results in a lower ceiling for them.
If Jalen Johnson can build off his career year last year, then the Atlanta Hawks could find themselves back in the postseason once again. But as of now, the Hawks are a team with a lot of good, versatile players that are lacking a certain go-to top option. The line is exactly where Atlanta will be around a 42-45 win team.
11. Charlotte Hornets 35-47
Last season result: 44-38; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 38.5
Prediction: Under (*LOCK)
This one might be a bit of a hot take, but I think losing LaMelo Ball will hurt them a bit in the short term, but they are much better set up for a better long-term future.
Remember how bad the Charlotte Hornets were when Ball was out with injury or off the floor? Charlotte did enough this offseason that they won’t be a 20-win team without Ball, and the Hornets brought in enough depth and veteran leadership to still have a competitive team. The team is similar to Atlanta in a sense where they have a lot of balance and depth to be respectable but not enough star power to compete with the top teams in the deep East.
12. Washington Wizards
Last season result: 17-65; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 35.5
Prediction: Under
This team has a higher ceiling to be able to easily double their wins from last season. However, it comes with a couple of question marks. For starters, can the young core, particularly first overall pick AJ Dybansta, be ready to contribute to winning basketball? Will Anthony Davis be able to stay healthy, or will he be dealt again at the deadline? Can Trae Young bounce back from a down season?
If everything clicks, it isn’t crazy to think that the Washington Wizards could fight for a play-in spot at least. But health and the young core will be the x-factors. Nevertheless, Washington is expected to be out of the NBA cellar.
13. Chicago Bulls
Last season result: 31-51; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 28.5
Prediction: Over
Getting 29 wins isn’t much to ask. The Chicago Bulls did pick up a couple of veterans in Norman Powell and Nic Claxton, who will be able to provide Chicago with a strong scoring punch and strong interior defense. The most important player to keep an eye on will be Caleb Wilson, their top draft pick. With him, Josh Giddey, and Matas Buzelis, Chicago might not win a lot of games, but they will be one of the more exciting teams in the NBA.
If the Bulls get off to a horrible start, then maybe Powell or Claxton get traded, and the Bulls are a low-to-mid-20s win team. But right now, I can see Chicago finishing between 28-33 wins. Chicago will be at least a year or two away from competing in the play-in tournament.
14. Brooklyn Nets
Last season result: 20-62; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 24.5
Prediction: Over
It doesn’t help that the Brooklyn Nets are in the most stacked division in the NBA. Make no mistake, Brooklyn should be better than they were last season. Their biggest trade was for Julius Randle, who was a three-time All-Star in New York and was the top option with a couple of those pre-Brunson teams. With him and Michael Porter Jr., it doesn’t raise the team’s ceiling all too much. However, the Nets will have a much higher floor, and these Nets could be closer to a 30-win team than the team that went 20-62 last season.
15. Milwaukee Bucks
Last season result: 32-50; missed the playoffs
Regular season win line: 24.5
Prediction: Under
Someone had to take the bottom floor of the conference, and why not the team that just traded their franchise star after 13 years. The Milwaukee Bucks, as constructed, can be a frisky team that stays in games and gets some unexpected wins. They have depth and interesting pieces. Let’s not forget they got an upgrade at the head coach in Taylor Jenkins over Doc Rivers.
But this team is currently in stage zero of a rebuild, and some of those pieces like Turner, Tyler Herro, and others could be valuable trade pieces at the deadline. I don’t believe Milwaukee will be historically bad, but a low-to-mid-20s-win team sounds like where they’ll be.
