Week two in the NFL and the fantasy world has been turned on its ear by a glut of injuries, especially at the quarterback position, which has put teams and fantasy owners in quite a bind. However, there are some teams that are dealing with key injuries at other positions that could open up value in your DFS roster construction. I am going to offer up GPP (guaranteed prize pool) positional plays for your week three daily fantasy rosters that might help you differentiate from the field. (This is based on Draft Kings pricing and Sunday main slate, 13 games).
Week Three Daily Fantasy Under the Radar Plays
Quarterback: Carson Wentz $5,600
While the focus of DFS builds this will be on the Kansas City Chiefs–Baltimore Ravens game, and rightly so, I think the Detroit Lions–Philadelphia Eagles game is flying under the radar. Carson Wentz has already averaged more than 40 pass attempts per game and I don’t see it slowing down this week. Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders aren’t doing much on the ground and Wentz has had to air it out. It also helps that they’ve been playing from behind in both games. Yes, Alshon Jeffery and Desean Jackson are both hurt but that won’t keep Wentz from having to pass most of this game.
The worry is the Lions offensive scheme. They like to run a ball-control offense which will slow the game down. However, I’m not worried. Kyler Murray passed 40 times (yes, going into overtime) and Philip Rivers passed 36 times. The thing is the Eagles are having a hard time running the ball. Conversely, the Eagles boast a very good run defense which will force the Lions to pass more than, maybe, they want. These are the reason I like Wentz this week in DFS and I like stacking him with Nelson Agholor (11 targets week 2) and Zach Ertz (16 targets week 2). While Agholor is a must-add in cash games, look to roster Mack Hollins or JJ Arcega-Whiteside in your GPP line-ups.
Running Back: Frank Gore $4,400
I don’t like it, but you have to consider it. The Buffalo Bills are at home against a reeling Cincinnati Bengals team that was just gashed by the San Francisco 49ers running backs. The other factor is that Devin Singletary has been limited in practice. This week, Singletary has been ruled out with a sore hamstring. Gore had 19 carries, on the road, against the New York Giants. While Josh Allen will still take off and run on occasion it would be in the best interest of the Bills to preserve Allen in a game that they should be in control from start to finish. Rostering Gore will save salary and this might be a better play on FanDuel due to the fact the Gore won’t get any work in the passing game. I like the old man to get 25 carries for more than 100 yards and a touchdown and stacking him with the Bills defense.
Wide Receiver: Emmanuel Sanders $4,800
The Denver Broncos take to the road to face the Green Bay Packers in week three. Joe Flacco passed the ball 50 times against a very good Chicago Bears defense. Emmanuel Sanders was the beneficiary of Flacco’s targets getting 13 and hauling in 11 for 98 yards and one touchdown. This is a game that could find the Broncos playing from behind and having to pass. The Packers outside corners, Jaire Alexander and Kevin King, are very good. Sanders will be matched up with Tramon Williams, although very good in his own right, will have his hands full with the crafty veteran.
Tight End: Austin Hooper $3,600
He was on the radar of many season-long fantasy owners. He hasn’t done anything two games into the season to garner confidence adding him to starting line-ups. However, Hooper is still getting the targets, nine for nine receptions week one and six targets for four catches week 2. The Atlanta Falcons square off against the Indianapolis Colts. Tight ends have been able to find open seems against the Colts. I think this is the week Hooper gets into the end zone.
Defense: Tampa Bay Buccaneers $2,900
Tampa Bay welcomes the New York Giants and Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones aka Danny Dimes. Will the Bucs be able to keep Danny from dropping too many on them? I don’t think so. Surprisingly the Buccaneers rank near the top in fantasy points. It’s obvious the Giants will most likely lean on Saquon Barkley and he’ll be his check down on dropbacks. The Buccaneers should be able to get pressure on Jones and force him into bad decisions.
Under the Radar
At first look, the play is to fit the stud running backs. Barkley, Ezekiel Elliott, and Christian McCaffrey are in excellent spots. Will I jam them all into a line-up this weekend. Of course, I am. However, an under the radar play might be to jam the stud receivers. Julio Jones, Davante Adams, and Keenan Allen will continue to get a large target share. The running back position could have some excellent value to open that path to a tournament take-down.
