Top Third Basemen in MLB

Third base is one of the deepest positions in the majors. You got the veterans in Beltre, Longoria, Wright, and Frazier. And you got the young guns in Bryant, Arenado, Machado, Donaldson, and Bregman. It is called the hot corner for a reason. Here are the top third basemen in baseball today.

10. Evan Longoria

At the ago of 31, “Longo” is still producing for the Tampa Bay Rays. He is a career .271 hitter with 241 home runs and 806 runs batted in. Last season he hit .273 with 36 home runs, 41 doubles, 4 triples, and 98 runs batted in. Longoria has definitely given a little away defensively, however offensively he is certainly still producing in Tampa.

9. Alex Bregman

Bregman was the Astros top prospect a year ago. This year he is primed to be their starting third baseman. He is a career .300 hitter in the minors with 24 home runs and 95 runs batted in. After starting out 2 for 38 in his MLB career he finally turned it around. In his final 163 at-bats last season he hit .313 with eight home runs. That is definitely a sign of things to come from the youngster in Houston.

8. Todd Frazier

Frazier is a power source in the league. He has 148 home runs over his six year career. The biggest issue with Frazier is his 694 strike outs over that same span. Frazier was a pure power hitter last season, but is due for a bounce back season in his contract year.

7. Adrian Beltre

Has been a force in the league since 1998 when he first played for the Dodgers as a rookie. Even in his older years, Beltre is still producing at a high level. Last season he had an average of .300 with 32 home urns and 104 runs batted in. Over his 19-year career he has an average of .286 with 445 home runs and 1571 runs batted in.

6. Justin Turner

Since being non-tendered by the Mets in 2013, Turner has done nothing but tear the cover off the ball. In three seasons with the Dodgers, Turner has hit .296 with 50 HR’s, 27 of which were this past season, and 193 RBI’s, 90 of which came this past season. Despite a dreadful start to the season due to an offseason micro-fracture knee surgery, Turner was still able to post a stellar mark of .275. Turner is a different type of ballplayer. He plays the game hard and the right way.

5. Kyle Seager

Seager has been a very consistent piece on one of the best power-hitting offenses in baseball. The past five seasons he has 123 home runs and 424 runs batted in. He averages around 25-35 doubles/season. Seager sees plenty of opportunities with men on base in that lineup, as he hits behind both Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz.

4. Josh Donaldson

The past four season Donaldson has finished in the top-10 in AL MVP voting. In the past four season he has 126 home runs and 413 runs batted in. Donaldson can do just about everything very well. He can work the count well, hit a home run on a pitch only he can, or make a nifty defensive play. Donaldson will remain a very productive Major League hitter for a longtime.

3. Manny Machado

The past two season Machado has come around as one of the better all around third basemen in baseball. In his three full seasons, he has finished in the top-10 in American League MVP voting, and the past two seasons he has been in the top-5. Machado has picked up his power as of late, he has 72 home runs, 70 doubles, and has driven in 182 runs the past two years. Defensively, Machado is a two time Gold Glover, and has shown some unreal range and an incredibly strong arm.

2. Nolan Arenado

Arenado is one of the best all around third basemen in the league. The past two season he has led the National League in home urns and runs batted in, with 42 and 130 in 2015 and 41 and 133 last season. Arenado is a four time Gold Glove award winner, winning it every years he’s been in the majors, and a back to back Silver Slugger the past two seasons. Defensively he has been the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year the past two seasons.

1. Kris Bryant

Bryant is an absolute freak. The Cubs super prospect has lived up to all the hype and some. In two seasons, Bryant has hit 65 HR’s and driven in 201 runs. His rookie season he won Rookie of the Year and last season he was named the NL Most Valuable Player. Bryant is not only an excellent hitter, he also has shown some tremendous base running ability. Defensively, Bryant has one of the best arms at the hot corner but still has some room to develop.
