This season has been one of the most unique ones in NBA history. Play was paused in March and continued in August where the season was resumed in Orlando. The Playoffs were held without any problem and soon crowned the Los Angeles Lakers as the 2019-2020 NBA Champions. Now that the season is over, the NBA and NBAPA have to figure out when offseason events will take place and when the season will start. As of now, the start of free agency is unknown. Nevertheless, there are some great NBA free agents that are available this offseason. They range from NBA Champions to experienced veterans. Free agency is one of the most exciting dates in the NBA and we can’t wait for it to get started.
Top Five 2020 NBA Free Agents
Anthony Davis (Center/Power Forward)
Last offseason, the Lakers traded Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart to the New Orleans Pelicans for Anthony Davis. He then paired with LeBron James in what turned into the Lakers’ first NBA Championship since 2010. Davis was a huge reason why as he averaged 26.1 points per game with 9.3 rebounds and shot 50.3 percent from the field in the regular season. He carried it into the Orlando bubble as he averaged an impressive 27.7 points per game with 7.1 rebounds a game and shot 57 percent from the field in the playoffs. Davis has a player option this offseason and the thought is that he will opt-out to sign a new contract with the Lakers. The duo of him and LeBron will be deadly for years to come.
Brandon Ingram (Power Forward/Small Forward)
Knowing Davis will go back to the Lakers, Ingram might be the biggest free agent this offseason. He will likely seek a max contract after his great performance in New Orleans. Ingram has been on the rise and this year has been his best. He averaged 23.8 points per game, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. Ingram is a restricted free agent meaning the Pelicans have a chance to match any offer given to Ingram. The Pelicans would like to keep him as they are an up and coming team with young players and a new coach. His good play and experience would help that team in many ways.
Fred VanVleet (Point Guard)
Fred VanVleet might be the most underrated player on this list. He’s improved each of his four seasons with the Toronto Raptors. VanVleet was a huge part of the Raptors championship run in 2019. He also played a huge part to get the Raptors into the playoffs this season as the second seed. In his fourth year, VanVleet averaged 17.6 points per game in all 54 games in the regular season and averaged 19.6 points in the playoffs. He can make plays and is a good defender. Any team would be lucky to get this type of gritty player this offseason.
DeMar DeRozan (Small Forward/Shooting Gaurd)
In 2018, DeMar DeRozan was traded from the Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs in a blockbuster trade for Kawhi Leonard. Over the last two seasons with the Spurs, DeRozan has had consistent numbers when it comes to points, rebounds, and assists. His assists and rebound numbers were just slightly down from 2018-19 but he shot better from the field. His defense has suffered as well but any team would be crazy not to want a guy like DeRozan. He puts his heart on his sleeve and puts in effort for his team all season. His player option for this season is set at $27.7M so it’ll be interesting to see if he stays or tests the free-agent market.
Montrezl Harrell (Center)
The Sixth Man of the Year award went to Montrezl Harrell as he averaged 18.6 points per game in 63 games. He averaged 10.5 points in the playoffs this season with the Los Angeles Clippers. Harrell had a breakout year in 2018-19 and carried it to this past season. He has increased his market value for his performance each of the last two seasons and can be an important part of a run for a contending team.
