Jadeveon Clowney was franchise tagged by the Houston Texans in March. He has yet to sign the tender as contract talks are getting nowhere between the two. Many say he will report to the team soon but that doesn’t mean he won’t be gone before the season starts. The Texans are currently operating without a General Manager and that means head coach Bill O’Brien takes over all operations. This doesn’t help the situation at all. The team who trades for him will be paying at least about $16M and cannot sign Clowney to a long-term deal. A few teams would love to add Clowney to their team and sure up that defense. Here are three teams that should trade for Jadeveon Clowney.
Three Teams That Should Trade For Jadeveon Clowney
Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are trying to build up that defense again and Clowney would be a great fit. They traded Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs and would be relying on first-round pick L.J. Collier. They also are banking on the fact that Ezekiel Ansah will be healthy. They were unwilling to pay Clark so the Clowney deal probably won’t happen but the Seahawks would be a good fit for him. The Seahawks are a team to never go down in a fight and a team that is always in the mix. Trading for Clowney will improve that defense.
Indianapolis Colts
This is an unlikely destination for Clowney given that the Indianapolis Colts are in the same division as the Texans. Ideally, they would like to send him out of the AFC so they don’t have to face him. If this were to happen, the Colts defense would be even better than it already is. They have the most amount of cap space of any team in the league. It was reported that Andrew Luck will be out of all pre-season games with a leg injury. If he is going to miss some time, the offense might no be there but they can win some games with that defense. Andrew Luck seems to have injury issues with the Colts so who knows how long he will be playing. Adding Clowney would be a very wise choice but as I mentioned, this is very unlikely given they are in the same division.
Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins have a perfect piece that the Texans have been looking for. All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is currently holding out as he is not happy with the organization. The Texans need to build up that offensive line, specifically that left tackle position and Trent Williams is an obvious choice. The Redskins defense is already turning out to be a great one but adding Clowney would put that defense over the top. Not knowing what the offense will bring, the defense has to win them a few games. There couldn’t be a more perfect situation for a Williams/Clowney trade but there’s one problem that stands in the way. The Redskins have said that they aren’t looking to trade Williams at all. Williams hold out may last a long while but the Redskins aren’t flinching one bit. Maybe if the Texans blow them away but aren’t Clowney enough? Otherwise, this works out perfect for both teams.
The Final Drive
Clowney has been part of one of the best defenses in the league over the past several years in Houston. The Texans don’t want to change that but with no extension in talk then maybe the smart thing would be to trade him. O’Brien would be in charge of that and we wouldn’t know how that would go. Many teams would love to have Clowney but the only thing that hauls teams is the cap space and the short term he would have to serve for a team. I don’t know who gets him but whoever does will get their defense an immediate upgrade.
