Landing Spots Cam Newton

Potential Landing Spots For Cam Newton

The Cam Newton era has officially come to an end with the Carolina Panthers as he was officially released by his former team. Newton was the number-one overall pick in the 2011 draft and led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015. During his nine-year stint with Carolina, Newton was selected to three Pro Bowls and was the MVP of the league in 2015. Carolina was openly shopping Newton but failed to find any trade partners. Now that he’s on the market, let’s take a look at some potential landing spots for Cam Newton.

Potential Landing Spots For Cam Newton

Los Angeles Chargers

It feels like the Chargers and Newton have been linked to each other for a while now. It’s been rumored that the Chargers aren’t interested in bringing in another veteran quarterback but a healthy Newton is better than Tyrod Taylor. The Chargers have the potential to compete with Taylor under center but there’s a reason they were aiming to land Tom Brady in free agency. Bringing in Newton would give the Chargers a legit chance to compete in the AFC. When you watch this Chargers offense and see the concepts they like to run with the offensive weapons that they have, adding Newton just makes so much sense.

Washington Redskins

With new head coach Ron Rivera now in charge in Washington, it wouldn’t be surprising if they made a sales pitch to the 30-year-old quarterback. Plenty of speculation has surrounded management and Dwayne Haskins. The staff may not be sold on the young quarterback. In addition, it’s worth noting that Rivera could possibly want to bring in his own quarterback and not have to inherit Haskins. With Rivera bringing in his offense that he ran in Carolina it would make sense to look at Newton in free agency.

New England Patriots

This fit might be considered a longshot but the Patriots clearly need a starting-caliber quarterback due to the departure of Tom Brady. More importantly, the Patriots offensive weapons were beyond average last season but with 12 picks in this year’s draft, Bill Belichick has the resources to address them. Newton’s ability to make plays with his feet and extend plays is something the Patriots haven’t had in quite some time. For a team still looking to remain dominant, this move could benefit both sides.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The only quarterback currently on the Jaguars roster is Gardner Minshew. Minshew played pretty well in his rookie season and left us with reason to believe that he could possibly be the answer at for the organization at the quarterback position. I’m not suggesting just handing the starting job to Newton. However, bringing him in and allowing him to compete with Minshew and may the better quarterback win the battle.

The Quarterback Carousel is Getting Full

There aren’t enough starting jobs available for the number of quarterbacks looking for a new starting role with a new team. Evidently, that makes Newton’s situation more interesting. Quarterback needy teams have either already made their moves during the free agency period or are planning to target a quarterback in the draft. Newton will likely have to sign a short term deal with a team and prove he’s still capable of playing at a high level.
