An Overview of the Bills A.J. McCarron

The Buffalo Bills have officially signed former Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback A.J. McCarron. The Bengals selected McCarron in the 5th round of the 2014 NFL Draft and has been a backup for most of his NFL career. He has always been in the conversation when teams were looking to trade for a QB. This is because he has always shown potential to start. McCarron will join a Bills roster that will most likely be adding a rookie quarterback to the roster in the draft.

An Overview of the Bills A.J. McCarron

College Career

McCarron came into the league out of Alabama where he spent 4 seasons from 2010-2013. In his 3 seasons of starting he averaged 2,850 yards and 25 touchdowns a season with a career-high of 3,063 yards and 30 touchdowns. McCarron was the winner of the Maxwell Award in his senior season and was the runner-up for the Heisman. He would win two National Championships in his tenure at Alabama. He was also the first quarterback to win back to back championships in the BCS era. McCarron has shown he is a born winner and can bring that ability to the teaching of a young quarterback.

What Almost Was

McCarron was involved in a trade that fell through this past trade deadline. The Cleveland Browns attempted to acquire McCarron for a 2nd round draft pick. The trade wasn’t completed in time and McCarron instead finished up his contract and left for what would become Buffalo. It has since come full circle with Buffalo dealing their quarterback Tyrod Taylor to Cleveland. Cleveland traded a 3rd round pick for Taylor. Now McCarron will join Buffalo for what he is hoping will be his first real opportunity.

How He Affects the Bills Draft

While Buffalo will draft a quarterback, that QB might not be ready to start week one of the regular season and McCarron should get the first shot. He is hungry for an opportunity to prove himself and Buffalo have given him that chance to run with. His contract duration is two years so McCarron can’t be trapped behind a rookie for long if that is the case.
