2020 NFL Draft

Teams That Might Draft a Quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft

The 2019 NFL draft just ended and teams sought out after their future stars, specifically at the quarterback position. The teams that really wanted or needed a quarterback got what they were looking for. A few days after the draft there are now talks about who will draft a quarterback in next year’s draft. More than six teams drafted a quarterback. This leaves only a few teams that need one for next year, so what teams might draft a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft?

Teams That Might Draft a Quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft

Cincinnati Bengals

Even though the Cincinnati Bengals drafted quarterback Ryan Finley in the fourth round, nobody really expects him to be their future. Andy Dalton is under center right now for the Bengals but probably not for long. Dalton can’t get the team where they need to be even if they had the pieces around him cause he falls short every time. In 2015 and 2018, he missed time with a hand injury. Drafting a quarterback would just be the start of the Bengals “rebuilding” stage for new head coach Zac Taylor.

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders tanked last year to get three first round picks. They drafted their star running back in Josh Jacobs, defensive end Clelin Ferrell, and safety Johnathan Abram. The Raiders also traded for star receiver Antonio Brown. They are building around the quarterback position for the future. Who knows they might do something now but they have Derek Carr under center. He isn’t bad but he hasn’t proven to be “THE” guy in Oakland. Carr has a few years left on his contract but might end it early. No matter how this year turns out, the Raiders will probably get out of his contract in 2020. This means they need to find a quarterback, presumably from the draft.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers drafted a quarterback in the fifth round but that was really just to fill a spot. They don’t need to draft a starter for next year but they maybe want to draft a talented quarterback to sit behind Philip Rivers for a couple of years. Rivers is 37 years old and his window is starting to close. Not many quarterbacks last into their 40s so getting a talented backup for a couple of years that could step right in when Rivers retires would be ideal.

Miami Dolphins

I don’t know if the Miami Dolphins would draft a quarterback after they traded for their future quarterback in Josh Rosen but it could be a possibility. Even though they have Rosen now, the Dolphins will go nowhere this season. They will probably be towards the bottom of the league so that means a very high pick. Potentially number one overall. Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will probably be the number one pick. The Dolphins could do what the Arizona Cardinals did and draft their quarterback and trade Rosen. At this rate, I don’t know how long Rosen will last but the Dolphins need to do what is best for them.

Last Word

There are plenty of quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL draft. Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Jake Fromm are just a few of many top quarterbacks in next year’s draft. The quarterback play in the next couple years will be very good in the league. Teams want to make sure they have their future and aren’t left out of all the fun around the league. It will be very interesting to see what route teams will go to draft their quarterback.
