Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes Needs More Than Travis Kelce in Passing Game

The Kansas City Chiefs have become familiar with winning seasons, deep playoff runs and high expectations. Much of that success has come with Patrick Mahomes leading the offense.

Through six games, Kansas City has remained productive, ranking sixth in total offense and averaging 380.5 yards per game. However, the team’s recent loss to the Seattle Seahawks raised questions about whether its current group can handle the challenges ahead.

Patrick Mahomes Needs More Than Travis Kelce in Passing Game

Seattle Exposed a Problem Outside

The Seahawks held Kansas City to three points and 213 total yards. Mahomes completed 19 of 33 passes for 165 yards, threw one interception and failed to record a touchdown. Kenneth Walker III managed only 36 rushing yards on 14 carries.

The Seahawks loaded the box to slow Walker and challenged the receivers in man coverage. Kansas City’s wideouts struggled to create separation. Xavier Worthy caught three passes for 11 yards, while Travis Kelce finished with four catches for 44 yards.

The loss was not only about the receivers. Kansas City reached Seattle territory on each of its first three possessions but failed to score. Mistakes and missed opportunities also hurt the offense. Still, the game showed how difficult it becomes when defenses can crowd the box without paying for it downfield.

Travis Kelce Cannot Carry Passing Game Alone

Kelce leads Kansas City with 343 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Worthy has 217 yards, while Rashee Rice has 190. Those numbers show the gap between the tight end and the other options.

Rice should help after missing the Seattle game. He returned to full practice on Friday, October 30. But Kansas City still lacks a receiver who can consistently force safeties to respect the deep ball.

That absence became worse after Tyquan Thornton dislocated his ankle against Las Vegas. He had 11 catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns before the injury. His 19.9 yards per catch made him Mahomes’ most productive deep threat by average gain. The expected recovery timeline is 12 to 16 weeks.

Kansas City Must Finish More Drives

The Chiefs’ problems go deeper than just not having enough good receivers. In six games, they only made 28 out of 71 third downs (39.4%) and scored touchdowns on 13 of 23 red-zone tries. These stats need to improve, even when Mahomes gets the ball to an open receiver. A new receiver could help them keep drives going by opening up the field.

But the coaches also need to call better plays and finish drives near the goal line. The loss to Seattle showed their receiver troubles, but one trade will not fix the whole offense. Mahomes needs more help, and the team needs to use what they have better.

Chiefs Need to Find the Right Trade Target

Kansas City should pursue a receiver who can win outside and beat man coverage. George Pickens would be the biggest addition. NFL.com recently identified him as a dream target for the Chiefs if Dallas becomes willing to trade him. That remains hypothetical, not a confirmed negotiation.

Josh Downs offers another option. He requested a trade from Indianapolis and has 26 catches for 307 yards through seven games. Downs can help Mahomes against man coverage, but he primarily offers a different skill set from the deep threat Kansas City lost.

The Chiefs should prioritize an outside receiver who can stretch coverage. A player who only adds short routes would not solve the problem Seattle exposed. The trade deadline falls on November 10, leaving Kansas City a short window to act.

The Last Word

Mahomes has thrown for 1,474 yards and nine touchdowns through six games. His 64.9 percent completion rate and 95.3 passer rating show that the passing game had been productive before the Seattle loss.

But the Chiefs need more reliable options beyond Kelce. Rice’s return will help, yet Thornton’s injury leaves a clear gap. Kansas City should use the deadline to find a receiver who can beat outside coverage and make defenses respect the deep ball. Kelce can remain a major part of the passing game without carrying it alone.
