Travis Kelce Joins Elite NFL Company Despite Chiefs’ Offensive Collapse Against Seattle

Travis Kelce added another milestone to his Hall of Fame-worthy résumé and joined elite NFL company, but the Kansas City Chiefs had little to celebrate on Sunday night.

Kansas City’s unbeaten run came crashing down at Lumen Field, as the Chiefs fell 20-3 to the defending champion Seattle Seahawks. After dominating their first five games, Patrick Mahomes and Co. finally hit a wall, dropping to 5-1 as Seattle’s defense shut down the high-powered offense.

Travis Kelce Cracks NFL’s Top Five in Career Receptions

Kelce gave Chiefs Kingdom a rare bright spot in an otherwise forgettable night in Seattle. The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season, falling 20-3 to the Seahawks on Sunday night as the offense failed to find its groove. But even in a lopsided road loss, the veteran tight end found a way to join elite NFL company.

Kelce hauled in four of his eight targets for 44 yards against Seattle, taking his career receptions tally to 1,103.

That pushed him past Indianapolis Colts legend Marvin Harrison, who finished his career with 1,102 catches, and into fifth place on the NFL’s all-time receptions list. Cris Carter sits just behind Harrison with 1,101 career grabs.

The company at the top of the leaderboard is elite. Jerry Rice leads the way with 1,549 receptions, followed by Larry Fitzgerald (1,432), Tony Gonzalez (1,325) and Jason Witten (1,228). As reporter Mike Garafolo pointed out, tight ends now occupy three of the top five spots — a testament to how the position has evolved and how Kelce has helped redefine it.

NFL History Made as Chiefs Get Shut Down by Seahawks

At 37, Kelce continues to be a reliable safety valve for Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense. Heading into Sunday night, the veteran tight end had hauled in 20 catches for 299 yards and two touchdowns this season. His four grabs against Seattle bumped those numbers to 24 receptions for 343 yards, adding another milestone to an already legendary résumé.

The record-breaking moment, however, came amid a nightmare outing for Kansas City. Seattle’s defense held the Chiefs to just 213 total yards, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba torched the secondary for nine catches, 150 yards, and a touchdown to help the Seahawks cruise to a 20-3 win.

For Kelce, the milestone also came just a week after a health scare that had Chiefs Kingdom holding its breath.

Last Word on Kelce

For years, Gonzalez set the gold standard for tight ends in Kansas City. There was little debate about who owned the crown — until Kelce came along. The veteran pass-catcher rewrote the record books, put up numbers rarely seen from the position, and helped lead the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles.

Now, Kelce has added another feather to his cap on the NFL’s all-time regular-season receptions leaderboard. With 1,104 career catches, he has climbed into fifth place all-time, further cementing his status as one of the greatest tight ends to ever lace them up.

Unfortunately for Chiefs Kingdom, Kelce’s record-breaking night came with a bitter pill to swallow. His milestone wasn’t enough to keep Kansas City’s winning streak alive, as the Chiefs fell short of extending their run to six straight victories.

Mahomes, Kelce, and Co. will now look to regroup and get back in the win column on Sunday when they hit the road to face the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High. Denver has won three straight games and will be looking to defend its home turf, setting up a tough AFC West showdown for a Chiefs team eager to bounce back.
