After week 5, which teams lead specific categories? Usually, if a team is leading a category, it means they are probably winning more games. So far in 2025, here are some teams leading major categories.
Team Stat Leaders in College Football After Week 5
Â
Passing Offense:
1. Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0)
2. Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-1)
3. Baylor Bears (2-2)
So far, the high-powered Texas Tech Red Raider offense leads this category, averaging 368 YPG, while the Nebraska Cornhuskers are second with 351 YPG. The Red Raiders have been essentially unstoppable to begin the season, thanks to their powerful start on both sides of the ball. Nebraska has done exceptionally well passing the ball behind Dylan Raiola. Raiola has also had great targets. Meanwhile, the Baylor Bears have eked out some wins mainly behind their offense, which has carried the team so far.
Rushing Offense:
1. Navy Midshipmen (4-0)
2. Florida State Seminoles (3-1)
3. Missouri Tigers (5-0)
Interestingly, the undefeated Navy Midshipmen have done well rushing the ball this season so far. The Florida State Seminoles have also done pretty good, thanks to the dual-threat QB Tommy Castellanos. The Missouri Tigers have been led by great halfback Ahmad Hardy en route to their 5-0 start. Navy hopes to threaten in the American Conference while Missouri hopes to do the same in the SEC. After last week, Florida hopes to recollect themselves behind their great offense.
Passing Defense:
1. Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-1)
2. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-1)
3. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)
Nebraska has so far had the best secondary by far, only allowing 75 yards per game in their first 4 contest. The longest pass allowed this season has also been only 19 yards, while the defense has not allowed one touchdown this season through the air. Second has the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have only allowed 113 YPG in their first 4 games as well. Alabama used their great secondary to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs, who were very inefficient through the air. Lastly, Oklahoma ranks 3rd, allowing just 118 YPG through the air while playing some pretty hard opponents. Oklahoma has complemented this with 16 sacks. Overall, each team wants to continue the momentum.
Total Offense:
1. Florida State Seminoles (3-1)
2. Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0)
3. USC Trojans (4-1)
Florida, through a deadly air and pass attack, leads the nation with 600 YPG through its first 4 games. Second is TTU, which is averaging 573 YPG, while the USC Trojans have been averaging 565 in their first 5 games. FSU wasn’t helped by its defense against the Virginia Cavaliers, while Texas Tech appears to be great on both sides of the ball. USC has remained an offensive powerhouse, which has never been an issue for Lincoln Riley, yet the defense remains horrible.
Total Defense:
1. Missouri Tigers (5-0)
2. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0)
3. James Madison Dukes (3-1)
The Missouri Tigers have used their elite defense to propel them to a 5-0 start, allowing just above 200 YPG. Oklahoma has also been elite, defeating two ranked opponents via its great defense. So far, James Madison has looked like the best team in the Sun Belt, with their lone loss being against the Louisville Cardinals, in which they allowed just 28 points. Oklahoma and Missouri both hope to compete in the rough SEC. For both teams, with teams like the Tennessee Vols and Georgia Bulldogs having a loss, now is the time to take advantage.
These stats can be meaningless in the outcomes of future games. However, it’s still good to see, as it shows who’s doing well in certain areas. The better the rushing offense, the better the chance of winning and so forth. What these stats do show is that certain teams are capable of really being good this season. Being capable of doing something doesn’t mean much if you don’t do it. However, sometimes, teams will leave up to their superstar potential, and these teams do have that potential.
