With the off-season free agency is in full swing in the NFL, Packer fans are accustomed to Ted Thompson starting free agency by re-signing current Packers players. Waiting as long as possible to bring in a new FA or two, and then waiting until the draft to continue adding to the roster has become one of his most notable traits. One signing that didn’t come as a surprise was the re-signing the veteran LB Nick Perry to a 5-year, $60M contract.
This off-season has been a little bit different though as Thompson has already gone out and signed FA tight-ends Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks. Bennett was signed to a deal worth three years, $20.25M, which includes a $6.3M signing bonus. The details on Kendricks’ signing is still unknown. So in the timespan of 24 hours, the Packers were able to add 105 catches, 1,200 yards and 9 touchdowns from 2016 production at the TE position. Those weapons certainly sound pretty on paper.
Though it is quite saddening to see the likes on Micah Hyde, Jared Cook, and T.J Lang go, it is still very early in free-agency. Even sometimes you may ask yourself, “What the hell is Ted Thompson thinking?” but at the end of the day, Ted Thompson continues to keep Green Bay a favorite to win it all and fans can look for that to continue throughout 2017.
