The first Round of the 2019 NFL Draft has past and there were a lot of big names out there. There were some surprises and there were some headscratchers. The Washington Redskins coming into the draft were likely to pick a quarterback with the 15th overall pick. They did pick a quarterback at 15 but it’s not necessarily who we thought it would be.
Dwayne Haskins Fell Right Into The Redskins Lap
Washington Redskins
The Redskins had two first-round picks on Thursday. They had the 15th overall pick, and they traded back into the first round with the 26th overall pick. We had no idea what direction they would go at #26 but we had a pretty good idea at #15. That was a quarterback. A lot of people were right, they did draft a quarterback but it’s not what we really expected.
The Redskins picked quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick. It couldn’t have worked out any better for the Redskins. There were a few teams in front of Washington who we thought would pick a quarterback but only Daniel Jones and Kyler Murray were off the board.
Many thought the New York Giants would pick Haskins out of Ohio State with the sixth overall pick but instead opted for Jones out of Duke. Fans were shocked with the pick but as the draft moved on, we looked at the next team that needed a quarterback. The next possible team was the Denver Broncos with the 10th-overall pick. Even though the Broncos weren’t a lock to pick a quarterback, especially Haskins, there was a good chance. The Broncos didn’t even draft a quarterback. This left the Miami Dolphins as the last team that could’ve possibly picked a quarterback with the 13th-overall pick. They have Ryan Fitzpatrick under contact for a couple of years but many would’ve picked Haskins. They passed as well.
After 14 picks, Haskins was still on the board until the Redskins picked him. This was a complete steal for the Redskins and it couldn’t have worked out better. The Redskins needed a quarterback after Alex Smith got injured and both Colt McCoy and Case Keenum need to prove they could start.
Stats
Haskins had a 50:8 touchdown-to-interception ratio last year for Ohio St with 4,831 passing yards. The Draft and combine profile didn’t look bad at all. He had a 6.20 draft grade which meant that he has the ability to become an instant starter. Haskins is 6″3, 231 lbs. A big and stocky quarterback in the NFL is ideal. He ran a 5.04 40 yard dash and had a vertical jump of 28.5. Last year he was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and led his team to a conference title. Ohio State just missed out on the College Football Playoffs but Haskins brought his team within reach. He finished third in the Heisman voting.
Haskins looks like a good quarterback that can help a team that needed it.
Last Word
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said that Haskins had the potential to the number one starter and that he is expected to have a chance to start right away. Though many think he should get the start, he is going to prove he can do it over Colt McCoy and Case Keenum. No disrespect to either of those quarterbacks but I think Haskins has the starting job locked up. The Redskins have the defense and now with their future quarterback, they are looking to make waves through the league.
