Von Miller help the Broncos

Homecoming in the Mile High? Could Von Miller Help the Broncos in 2026?

The Denver Broncos are dreaming of AFC dominance, but their defense could possibly use some veteran spark. Enter franchise icon Von Miller. Entering the 2026 NFL season, the eight-time Pro Bowler and active NFL sack leader is an unrestricted free agent and it’s no secret that he has high interest in finishing his career where it began. Could the 37-year-old edge rusher actually help a Denver defense that is already one of the best in the league?

Why Von Miller Could Help the Broncos

The 2025 Renaissance: Proof in the Production

To understand if Miller can contribute, one only needs to look at his 2025 campaign. After an injury-plagued and frustrating tenure in Buffalo, Miller inked a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders. Instead of fading into obscurity like many people assumed, the future Hall of Famer showed he still has a lethal first step.

Playing in all 17 regular-season games, Miller racked up nine sacks. It was his highest single-season tally since the 2021 season. While he acknowledged that his snap counts were managed, he played an effective rotational role that proved he can still efficiently get to the quarterback. For a team like the Broncos, who recorded an impressive 68 sacks in 2025, adding a seasoned rotational edge rusher like Miller could provide a proven spark off the bench.

Filling the Void as a Veteran Mentor

Miller himself has been highly vocal about wanting to return to Denver, lobbying both publicly and privately with head coach Sean Payton. However, he isn’t expecting to step in as a full-time starter. Instead, Miller envisions a highly specific, mentorship-based role.

He has explicitly stated he wants to be for Denver’s young outside linebackers, like Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper, what DeMarcus Ware was for him during Ware’s three seasons in Denver. Bonitto, who had a stellar 2025 campaign, and Cooper have developed into strong starters, but the addition of an all-time great like Miller to share pass-rush techniques, film study habits, and game-day preparation is an invaluable asset. He could seamlessly rotate in to give the starters a breather, keeping the entire defensive line fresh and dangerous in late-game situations.

The Business and Financial Fit

From a financial perspective, a reunion makes a lot of sense for Denver. Miller will not command the monstrous six-year, $120 million contract he received from the Bills in 2022. At this stage in his career, he is looking for an opportunity to contend for a championship and be in the right locker room. He could likely be signed on a team-friendly, veteran-minimum deal with incentives depending on his sack totals or the team’s success.

Denver’s defense was already the third-best in the league at preventing scoring in 2025. Plugging Miller into that rotation not only bolsters the pass rush but costs virtually nothing in terms of long-term cap flexibility. The front office would be acquiring a proven locker room leader whose contagious energy ensures players are always ready to compete.

Unfinished Business in Denver

For Denver fans, the prospect of seeing the MVP of Super Bowl 50 back in the orange and blue is nothing short of thrilling. Miller has expressed a desire to win another Super Bowl before he retires, and doing it with the Broncos one more time would be the ultimate capstone to his career. Denver will likely have a difficult schedule considering the fact that they won the AFC West in 2025. Playing other divisional champions from 2025 likely means that Denver will be facing plenty of great quarterbacks, so adding another dangerous pass rusher could be very beneficial.

Whether or not the front office decides to pull the trigger depends on how heavily they prioritize veteran leadership over developing younger, unproven draft picks. However, if Payton is looking for a cheap, high-reward rotational pass rusher who can instantly boost morale and elevate the younger talent, bringing Miller back home could prove to be one of the smartest moves of the 2026 offseason.
