With the NFL Draft officially behind us, there are many conclusions that can be drawn. It is officially T-Law time in Jacksonville, and the NFC East got better. But one surprise to many fans is what the Chicago Bears did.
The Bears, who originally held the 20th pick, traded all the way up to the 11th pick, originally held by the Giants. Chicago sent the 20th pick, and next year’s first and fourth-round picks to move up to 11.
With the 11th overall selection, the Bears selected Justin Fields, a quarterback out of Ohio State. This was a fantastic move. The new Chicago Bears quarterback has a good system around him.
Did the Chicago Bears Finally get their Franchise Quarterback?
Going into the Draft, the Bears didn’t have a quarterback. Because let’s be honest, Andy Dalton wasn’t getting them very far. So the Chicago Bears quarterback situation wasn’t very good.
So as Justin Fields slipped out of the top ten, Chicago needed to go move up and grab him. And rightfully so.
Fields was a stud at Ohio State. In only eight games this year due to cancelation because of COVID-19, Fields threw for 2,100 yards with 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He did all of this on top of getting the Buckeyes to the National Championship, where they lost to Alabama.
2019 is where Fields really shined. He threw for 3,273 yards on top of an amazing 41 touchdowns with just three interceptions. This was all done in his sophomore year at Ohio State.
Not only does Fields have a rocket of an arm, but he is a great scrambling quarterback as well. He is the perfect quarterback for today’s NFL. He is able to both throw the ball down the field and run out of the pocket if he had to.
The Right Team Around Him
The new Chicago Bears quarterback is not walking into the worst situation, though the Chicago Bears have been known for being delusional in the front office.
Allen Robinson will be his best friend next year, as he is coming off a great 2020 campaign. Anthony Miller and Marquise Goodwin will also be there for Fields to lean on in the receiving game.
Expect the Bears to run the read-option a lot this year. David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen will be a great two-headed monster at running back. Fields will be able to continue to excel at the read-option, which he ran with Trey Sermon and Master Teague at Ohio State last year.
The Bears are clearly anchored by their defense and have been for the longest time now. Khalil Mack leads the linebacker core with Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan at his side. Eddie Goldman and Akiem Hicks are the figureheads on the defensive lines and are both sack machines.
Their secondary is loaded as well. Safety, Eddie Jackson, leads the charge of this secondary. Though they lost Kyle Fuller to the Broncos, Desmond Trufant is still a veteran corner who could be great for the Bears.
Is Fields the Man?
The Chicago Bears quarterback situation has been messed up for years. It now seems like they have their guy for the future.
Did the Bears give up a lot? Yes. But will it be worth it in the end? I believe so. Fields has great weapons around him and as long as Matt Nagy continues to draft right and fulfill his needs, Fields will be a top quarterback.
The Windy City is a tough place to play in. Fields didn’t play too far from there in college, so the adjustment shouldn’t be terrible.
With a top-tier defense and a good offense around him, it should be a good stay in Chicago for the new kid on the block. With Aaron Rodgers‘ future in Green Bay questionable, could Justin Fields be the next top quarterback in the NFC North?
