The Alabama Crimson Tide has plenty of talented players on their roster, but one player could be the Tide’s key to success.
That player is quarterback Keelon Russell.
Russell has taken over as Alabama’s starting quarterback in his sophomore season and has quickly become one of the most important pieces of Kalen DeBoer’s offense. Through six games, Russell has completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 1,599 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. He has also added 225 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Those numbers show why Russell has become such a major part of Alabama’s success.
However, his importance goes beyond the statistics.
Why Keelon Russell is the Tide’s Key to Success
Russell Gives Alabama a Dynamic Offense
One of the advantages for Alabama is their quarterback, Russell. He has the ability to make plays in multiple ways, by passing and scrambling.
Russell can attack with his arm, but he is also capable of scrambling for a lot of yards on a single play. Through six games, Russell has passed for 1,599 total yards, with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions.
His dual-threat ability creates problems for opposing defenses.
The defenders can’t only focus on him throwing the ball because he can also run with his legs and pick up big yards, and that makes Russell a very hard player to defend when he is playing at his best.
His Best Games Have Been Impressive
Russell has shown us that he can take over the game.
Against Florida State, he threw for 320 yards and three passing touchdowns. The following week, he was even better, throwing for 365 yards and four touchdowns against South Carolina.
Those performances have helped Alabama put together a strong season so far. They also showed what Alabama can look like when Russell is playing with confidence and making throws down the field.
Alabama Needs Him to Bounce Back
Russell’s performance against the Georgia Bulldogs was underwhelming admittedly.
Russell completed 16 of 30 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown, and that led to a 20-17 loss to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs ‘ defense was able to put pressure on him throughout the game, and they got four sacks.
That game could be an important learning experience for Russell to do better in the future.
Every quarterback in their career will have difficult games, especially in the SEC. What matters is what the quarterback responds with in the future. For Russell, the opportunity comes fast.
Alabama is facing No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday, giving him a chance to respond against another ranked opponent in the SEC. Tennessee’s defense has been one of the best in the conference, making the matchup important for the sophomore quarterback.
Russell Could Determine How Far Alabama Goes
Alabama is currently 5-1, and the Crimson Tide still have plenty to play for. Russell will be one of the players to watch against Tennessee this weekend, as they look to bounce back after their loss to Georgia.
The defense can help carry the team. The running game can take pressure off Russell. The receiving corps can give him weapons to work with.
But when Alabama needs a big play, Russell is likely going to be the player everyone looks toward.
That is what makes him so important.
If Russell can continue developing as a passer, limit mistakes, and become more consistent against the SEC’s best defenses, Alabama has a chance to be a dangerous team down the stretch.
His ability to extend plays could also become especially important in close games. Alabama has already experienced how small mistakes can decide a matchup after losing to Georgia by just three points.
