The Philadelphia 76ers have, without a doubt, had a busy offseason thus far. However, they still have a chance at signing arguably the league’s greatest player of all time, in Lebron James, for just a veteran’s minimum contract. James made it clear that he cares more about winning a championship than money. After acquiring five-time All-Star and 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, the 76ers immediately became a legit possibility for James. There are also a few other teams that make sense for James, and with that being said, we take a look at the odds that the 76ers have at landing James.Â
76ers’ Reasons and Odds to Land LeBron James
There is no doubt that a starting five that already features Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, and Joel Embiid would immediately become an instant title contender with James as the fifth starter. James’s agent, Rich Paul, recently drew a star next to Maxey’s name on a board with the five primary teams in the inner circle. Trading for Brown instantly increased the 76ers’ odds to land James, and Maxey is a client at Klutch Sports Group, which is founded by Paul, who is James agent.
If that is not enough convincing, 76ers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey worked in the Cleveland Cavaliers front office for 15 years and was with James when he led the Cavaliers to a championship in 2016. With James now wanting to chase a championship, reuniting with Gansey could be a legit possibility. If the 76ers land James, this could be their best shot to win in years but they must stay healthy.
Other Teams in the Hunt
While James to Philadelphia remains a possible landing spot, there are also plenty of teams that have a chance to do so. The first team besides the 76ers is the Cavaliers. James was selected with the first pick in the 2003 NBA draft and spent 11 seasons with the Cavaliers, and led them to their first-ever NBA championship, making a return to his hometown for his final year a real possibility.
The next team is the Golden State Warriors. After James faced Stephen Curry four times in the NBA Finals, there is now a possibility of them joining forces. James and Curry built a bond off the court over the years, and Curry expressed an interest in golfing with James outside of basketball, and the bond between the two makes the Warriors an instant threat to get James.
The third and final real contender is the Miami Heat. James spent four seasons with the Heat from 2010 to 2014 and reached the NBA finals all four years and won two championships back-to-back. The Heat also traded for ten-time NBA All- Star and one-time NBA champion, Giannis Antetokounmpo, giving James another team that can contend. With James likely to retire after this season, the Heat have emerged as a real possibility for landing James again. Where do you think James will go for what could potentially be his final season?
