With a blowout win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts should be taken seriously as legit Super Bowl contenders.
The Indianapolis Colts are Serious Super Bowl Contenders
The Colts are 6-1 on the season and are currently the top seed in the AFC if the playoffs were to start today. The Colts may be the biggest surprise of the NFL season, and it isn’t halfway through the 2025 season. The Colts dominated the Chargers to the tune of 38-24; however, the final score made the game appear closer than it was. Every opponent the Colts have faced this season, they’ve simply dominated them, and it looks like they are rounding into a legit Super Bowl Contender.
Their one loss came to the LA Rams in a game they had two touchdowns called back from a fumble out of the endzone and a hold on a touchdown run, so they could easily be 7-0 right now. Head coach Shane Steichen has coached his team into a formidable threat in the AFC and the rest of the NFL.
The Colts’ Offense Is Currently the Best in the League.
The Colts have scored at least 30 points in five games this season, and that includes two games in which they scored 40 points. They lead the NFL in points per game at 33.1, yards per play at 6.4, and are second in the NFL in yards per game (380.3) and touchdowns per game (3.9). Indy is also currently first in offensive success rate at 51.3% according to rbsdm.com. Simply put, this Colts offense is a Super Bowl-contending offense.
Star running back Jonathan Taylor has been the engine to Indy’s offense. He is currently making a big case for Offensive Player of the Year, and the numbers say he is currently the best running back of 2025 so far this season. Taylor is first in the league in rushing yards with 697 and rushing touchdowns with ten.
The pass-catching core is as diverse as any in the league. Michael Pittman Jr. is a strong possession receiver. At the same time, rookie tight end Tyler Warren is a Swiss Army Knife, and having other complementary receivers such as Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, and Adonai Mitchell.
Daniel Jones Resurgence
Jones is in the midst of rewriting his career arc this season with Indy. In the offseason, Jones was signed as a high-priced backup quarterback who would have the chance to compete with third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson. Jones didn’t just win the starting job; he has helped take the Colts’ offense to a new level that they failed to do behind Richardson.
Jones is currently second in the league and the top AFC quarterback in EPA per play and drop-back success rate. He is first in the league in quarterback rating (QBR) and is fifth in passing yards with 1,790 to go along with ten passing touchdowns. It’s okay to be a little skeptical of how far Jones can lead the Colts and if they truly can be Super Bowl contenders among the other elite AFC quarterbacks, but each week, Jones has proven himself worthy to be in the MVP conversation.
The Colts Can Solidify Themselves in the Back Half of the Season
For those still skeptical about the Colts, they have a chance to turn some opinions in the second half of the season. Indy still has games against the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They will have plenty of opportunities to make statements, so convince the skeptics; however, so far, the Colts have looked to be more than a threat this season.
