Tyler Roemer was a starter at San Diego State this past season. He provided good protection as the team’s left tackle for the majority of the season, but he was eventually suspended indefinitely, and later dismissed from the program. After declaring for the 2019 NFL draft as a redshirt sophomore, Tyler Roemer’s draft profile is a little all over the place.

Background
As an offensive tackle in the state of Nevada, Roemer went unnoticed in his recruitment for the most part. According to 247sports, he was a 2-star prospect, and the 198th ranked offensive tackle in his recruiting class. Roemer received offers from Nevada, as well as Louisville, but ultimately he chose San Diego State.
His athletic profile was always intriguing, as a 6’7, 315-pound offensive tackle, there was always going to be lots of upside. According to the SDSU website, Roemer played both sides of the ball in high school. He played as a tackle, both offensive and defensive. As a high school basketball player as well, the athleticism and versatility was always there.
College Career
In Roemer’s first season with the team, he traveled to every game but was a backup at left tackle. After not playing, he redshirted the season. Roemer had started every game in his redshirt freshman season and then did so for the first ten games of his sophomore season. He was an integral part of the Aztecs offense, and the team went 0-3 without him, after starting the season 7-3.
Prior to the game against Fresno State, Roemer was suspended indefinitely. He was later dismissed from the team. The reasons for his dismissal are undisclosed, but the team would have been open to bringing him back. When asked if there was a chance for Roemer to return for the Aztecs’ bowl game, head coach Rocky Long stated that it seemed unlikely, but they would look at bringing him back for the next season.
NFL teams may have insight that was not available to the public. One thing to note though is that he was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Ultimately, this means that he was not charged legally when it comes to his dismissal.
NFL Future
As is the case with every prospect, Roemer’s team meetings will be incredibly essential to his NFL future. After starting 23 games, the tape is available, and his combine numbers were impressive. He needs to prove to teams, regardless of the reason for his dismissal, that he is prepared to clean up his act in order to make an impact at the next level because he has the talent to do so.
Roemer received Freshman All-American recognition in 2017. It was well deserved too. He struggles a little bit with his core strength, being bent backward slightly too often. That is one of my only criticisms of Roemer though. Of course, he can clean up areas of his game, but his length really stands out when you watch his pass protection. His pass protection graded out behind only Jonah Williams and Jawaan Taylor. His pass protection grade ended up being on par with other notables such as Dalton Risner and Yodny Cajuste.
Roemer’s run blocking is also pretty good, and he gets to the second level efficiently and sets up holes for his running back. As he focuses on his core strength, he can become a sturdier run blocker in the trenches as well. He uses his hands exceptionally to prevent pass rushers from beating him around the arc. Roemer’s traits are there to make an impact at the next level.
Last Word
Tyler Roemer has the ability to be an impact player in the NFL. It can’t be emphasized enough how important his team meetings are. As a player though, he deserves to be mentioned alongside some offensive tackle notables. Not only is Roemer a talented player, but he is also very young after declaring a redshirt sophomore. Without a doubt, he will have the ability to be groomed into a solid offensive tackle.
Roemer graded out as my fifth offensive tackle behind Jawaan Taylor, Jonah Williams, Dalton Risner, and Yodny Cajuste. Subsequently, that places him as my third ranked offensive tackle. Without a doubt, his off-field issues will cause him to slide down the draft, but if he can impress a team in their meeting, they will likely get great value on a very good left tackle.
