Dear New York Giants: It’s Time to Pay Odell Beckham Jr

There have been numerous big name NFL talents that have signed big extensions this offseason including Mike Evans and Taylor Lewan. However, there have been others that are looking for long-term deals similar to Odell Beckham Jr, such as Aaron Donald and Julio Jones Jr. Donald and Jones both have missed some of their team’s organized activities waiting for a new extension.

Beckham should be the next man up, however Giants management is only in the most preliminary state of negotiations. He is currently scheduled to make $8.5 million this season in the final year of his rookie contract. Beckham wants to be the highest paid player in the league. While this is a large request, Beckham is certainly deserving. Beckham has turned things around on and off the field this offseason.

Back and Better Than Ever?

When he was carted off the field last season in tears, fans knew the season was over. The main concern at that point was Beckham’s long-term health. Ever since that tear filled moment, Beckham’s number one goal has been rehabbing his injury. After months of dedicated rehab and training it appears he has reached that elite level once again.

Early in Giants training camp Beckham has made numerous great plays. He’s showed that the explosive speed in the open field is still there. Despite only a few days of training camp, Beckham has had a beautiful down field reception with Landon Collins in coverage and has spent some time after practice running some routes with Eli Manning to regain some of that great chemistry, in seasons’ past. In addition, he also continued his spectacular, what came to be routine one-handed catches, snagging the ball with ease in an endzone drill.

While it’s very early on in training camp, Beckham has shown that he has rehabbed 100% from last season’s injury and back ready to contribute with consistent elite level production.

Commitment to the Team

Many were surprised that Beckham decided to report to all team activities. It’s clear he’s showing a commitment to the team despite not having a long-term deal. As we know, he is a player that has had many people question his attitude and maturity. It’s clear that he’s raised his maturity level and is showing the team all of those question marks can be put in the past.

Beckham has attended and participated in all team activities. He also has been working out with other Giant players in California. Not only is Beckham improving his game, but he’s also strengthening his relationships. This is particularly with other offensive weapons including: Evan Engram, Saquon Barkley, and Sterling Shepard. Watching from a distance as a fan or part of the organization, all of your best offensive weapons training together can only be a sign of positive things to come during the season.

Regardless of how you felt about Beckham in the past it’s apparent this offseason, Beckham has matured a lot. He clearly wants to be the centerpiece of the Giants franchise for the foreseeable future.

Enough time has passed Giants management. It is time to sign Beckham to a long-term extension, making him the highest paid player in the league. This will ensure that he will be happy. It’ll also allow him to continue tormenting opposing defenses for Big Blue for many seasons to come.
