The first month of the MLB season has come and gone. There have been some huge stories thus far. Ryan Zimmerman and Eric Thames are both resurrecting their careers. Daniel Murphy and Mime Trout putting up MVP numbers yet again. Greg Holland and Matt Wieters are proving to be huge signings for their respective ball clubs. Here are the top performers for the first month of the MLB season.
Top Performers from First Month of the MLB Season
C : Matt Wieters, WAS
Matt Wieters is giving the Nationals just what they need out of the catcher position in their lineup. In 21 games, he is hitting .301 with four home runs and 12 RBI’s. Wieters was a big signing for the Nationals, and it is paying off for them with his play on the field.
1B : Ryan Zimmerman, WAS
Zimmerman is off to the best start of a season in his career. He is currently leading the majors in hits (39), home runs (11), RBI’s (29), batting average (.419), slugging percentage (.871), total bases (81), and OPS (1.326). Zimmerman won NL Player of the Month for April, and is a big reason the Nationals are one of the best offenses in baseball right now.
2B : Daniel Murphy, WAS
Daniel Murphy is following up his career year with much of the same. Murphy is hitting .383 with five homers, nine doubles, and 28 RBI’s. This including a grand slam against the Mets, and a walk off double against the Phillies.
3B : Eugenio Suarez, CIN
Through one month, Suarez looks like he is primed for a breakout year. Last season, he hit 21 homers but struck out 155 times. This season he has hit five homers through 25 games and is hitting to an average of .322. The Reds are still hanging around in the standings, and Suarez is a big reason why.
SS : Francisco Lindor, CLE
Lindor is off to a big start to this season offensively. Through 24 games, he is hitting .309 with eight doubles, seven homers, and 17 RBI’s. Thus includes a game winning grand slam back in the first week of the season.
OF : Eric Thames, MIL
Eric Thames has been the biggest storyline of the first month of the season. After leaving the MLB in 2012 for Korea, Thames has returned with a bang this season. Through 24 games, Thames hit 11 home runs, tied for the league lead, and six doubles, and hit to an average of .345. Thames has been more disciplined at the plate, leading to his incredible start.
OF : Aaron Judge, NYY
Aaron Judge has led the Bronx Bombers to a great start. At 6’7” 282 lbs, Judge is a massive specimen. In 22 games, he has hit .303 with 10 home runs and 20 RBI’s. Judge is looking like a favorite for AL Rookie of the Year, as he took home AL Rookie of the Month for April. The Yankees have 16 wins, and Judge is a huge reason why.
OF : Mike Trout, LAA
Trout is looking to win his third MVP award this season. He has started it the right way, winning the AL Player of the Month for April. He is making a strong case for it thus far. Trout is hitting .363 with ten doubles, two triples, seven homers, and 18 RBI’s. He also has a .455 on-base percentage and five stolen bases. The 6-time Silver Slugger looks primed for another big year.
SP : Dallas Keuchel, HOU
Keuchel has had a bounce back year through six starts. He has been awarded the AL Pitcher of the Month for the month of April. He has a record of 5-0 and a 1.21 ERA over 44.2 innings. Keuchel is still yet to allow more than two runs in a game, and has lasted seven or more innings in each of his starts. Keuchel appears to be back to his 2015 Cy Young form.
RP : Greg Holland, COL
Holland was a low risk, high reward signing for the Rockies. He was awarded the NL Reliever of the Month for the month of April. He was a perfect 12-for-12 in save opportunities, and only allowed two runs. Holland only allowed a total of seven hits over 12 innings. The Rockies took the risk of signing Holland, now they are reaping in the benefits of his dominant pitching.
