Thunder Player of the Week — Week 1

The first week of the 2024-25 NBA season is completed.

With a perfect 3-0 record to start the 2024-25 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder have been dominant. The strength of schedule hasn’t been the most difficult during the Thunder’s opening week. Still, OKC’s average margin of victory has been just over 19 points thus far, which is impressive regardless of the opponents.

Each week, I will aim to highlight my Thunder Player of the Week, with the focus on giving the spotlight — regarding a specific Thunder player, whom I believe played the best during that specific week.

Here’s my Week 1 — Thunder Player of the Week:

OKC Player of the Week

Chet Holmgren

Chet Holmgren led the Thunder to an undefeated week (3-0) in Week 1 with averages of 23.6 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, and 3.0 assists while shooting 56.2 percent from the floor.

Holmgren put on a superstar 2-way performance in their season opener against the Denver Nuggets. As he had a dominating stat-line of 25 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals, on — 11 of 18 shooting from the floor.

In Game 2 — Holmgren put together another strong performance against the Bulls. Finishing with 21 points, a career-high 16 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

To end the week, Holmgren finished a strong opening week with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks, 4 assists, and a steal, on — 8 of 12 shooting from the floor, and 3 of 5 from deep.

There’s a noticeable difference as Holmgren has been attacking the rim and generating constant rim pressure through the first three games of the season. He’s been dominant on both ends which is a big reason for the Thunder being undefeated through the first week of the season.

Holmgren’s Growth

Holmgren’s growth is evident thus far in his second season, with some critics calling Holmgren a twiner between being a forward and an center. He’s noticeably stronger, more aggressive, and more decisive, and has improved his ability to hold up on the interior.

Takeaways:

The Thunder are looking good through their first week of the season after earning the No. 1 seed as the youngest team in the Western Conference last year.

There was no letdown against Atlanta and Chicago, after beating Denver – 102 to 87 in an important game to start the season.

Note: In short, the Thunder has been dominant through the first week but hasn’t even gotten close to where this team will be when the offense gets going. If the start of the season is any indication of how good this Thunder team could be, this might be the best Thunder regular season in franchise history.
