The million dollar question in the metropolitan area is will the New York Giants draft the successor to their longtime quarterback Eli Manning in the 2019 NFL draft? Many draft experts have the Giants selecting Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins with the No. 6 overall pick. To many, Haskins is the top QB prospect in this draft.
If a team drafts Haskins before the Giants make their first pick, one quarterback the Giants should consider is Missouri’s, Drew Lock. Standing at 6’4″, 225 lbs, Lock has the size and a strong arm that should attract the New York Giants. Lock was a three-year captain at Missouri and played in the toughest conference in Division I collegiate football.
Should the New York Giants draft Drew Lock?
Drew Lock’s performance for the 2018 season
Lock burst onto the scene after throwing for 44 touchdowns in 2017. He fell off after a stretch of three games to start 2018, failing to throw for over 50% in his next three outings. Lock finished his 2018 season with an impressive showing in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, where he threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns.
After his Senior Bowl performance, Lock might have jumped to the front of the pack of eight QB participants. One of them included projected first-round pick Daniel Jones out of Duke. Lock is projected to go anywhere from high in the first round to early in the second round in most NFL mock drafts.
Why the Giants should draft Drew Lock
Lock’s stock is on the rise, but Haskins and Kyler Murray of Oklahoma are widely considered the top two quarterbacks in the draft. If the Giants were to draft Lock, he would be paired with running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. giving Big Blue a dynamic trio for years to come.
Lock is possibly the next Patrick Mahomes
Before the Senior Bowl, ESPN NFL Draft guru Todd McShay labelled Lock as a “poor man’s” Patrick Mahomes. NFL Network draft analyst and former quarterback Daniel Jeremiah also used the names “Mahomes” and “Lock” in the same sentence as well.
