NHL Draft: The First Pick Goes To A Mystery Team

The NHL Draft Lottery took place on Friday and it was full of surprises. In the NHL’s first event since the stoppage, fans relived the chaos that it brings. The Detroit Red Wings and the Ottawa Senators had the highest percentage to get the first overall pick in this year’s draft. Neither of them select in the top two as fans saw the unexpected happen not only with that but with the first overall pick. A very unlikely candidate took the top spot and that team is….a mystery. One team that is currently in the Stanley Cup Qualifying Round will have the number one overall pick. Like every year, the NHL Draft Lottery gives us some unexpected twists and turns and this year went above and beyond that.

NHL Draft: The First Pick Goes To A Mystery Team

The First Overall Pick

This year’s NHL Draft Lottery came with some surprises. The Red Wings dropped to four, the Senators had the second and third highest chance to get the first pick and dropped out of the top two, and a mystery team will have the first overall pick. The mystery team had less than a seven percent chance to climb to the top and they did. The eight teams that get eliminated from the Stanley Cup Qualifying Round will have a chance to get the number one overall pick in the NHL Draft. The team that is lucky enough to be the first pick will likely select Alex Laferriere. One of the eight teams will add the future of the franchise to a team that was on the fringe of the playoffs.

Red Wings Stunned

The Red Wings fall victim to a system that doesn’t guarantee the first overall pick to the team with the least points in the league. They had the best odds at 18.5 percent to get the first selection in the draft. Not only did they fail to secure the first pick, but they weren’t even selected in the top three as they’ll select fourth. The team and fans were shocked and upset, to say the least. The fourth overall pick is a great spot but given where they were projected to pick, it isn’t good news. The Red Wings got robbed of a good chance to get the clear number one player for the future. Now they look ahead to the draft board and scout who they’ll pick fourth overall.

Around The Rink

In a unique and different Draft Lottery, we’ll find out who has the number one overall pick in phase two. Phase two will take place after the Stanley Cup Qualifying Round. Each team eliminated from the qualifying round will have a 12.5 percent chance to get the first pick. In a time when the sports world needed something, the NHL pulled through even with controversy.
