The NFL training camps will be here before you know it and quarterback battles are shaping up to be the ultimate summer storyline. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting competitions across the league where veterans and rookies alike are fiercely fighting for the starting QB1 job.
The Five Most Interesting NFL Quarterback Battles
1. Las Vegas Raiders: Fernando Mendoza vs. Kirk Cousins
When a franchise uses a top draft pick on a signal-caller, a quarterback battle is almost always on the horizon. The Las Vegas Raiders drafted the number one overall pick Fernando Mendoza and the entire organization is trying to strike a balance between developing him and utilizing veteran stability.
Kirk Cousins has been brought into the fold, giving Las Vegas the luxury of a bridge starter. Despite the veteran’s money, history tells us top picks generally make their debut in September. Training camp will reveal exactly how quickly Mendoza can grasp the playbook and seize the starting reins.
2. Cleveland Browns: Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders
The Cleveland Browns have one of the most interesting quarterback battles because it pits high-priced veteran Deshaun Watson against ascending second-year talent Shedeur Sanders in a high-stakes clash of eras. Watson was rumored to be in the lead, but a strong spring from a “much improved” Sanders has caused new head coach Todd Monken to extend the competition into training camp.
Considering how much the Browns have invested in Watson, they would probably prefer for Watson to win the job, but Sanders has quickly become a fan favorite and may be able to provide the spark that this Browns team desperately needs. This may be one of the tightest quarterback battles of camp and may not be decided until after the final preseason game.
3. Minnesota Vikings: Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy
Kevin O’Connell‘s offense in Minnesota has set the stage for a classic “veteran vs. prodigy” showdown. Kyler Murray is adjusting to the Minnesota Vikings‘ system, acting as the intended franchise quarterback looking to assert himself as a title contender. However, the development of J.J. McCarthy is making serious noise.
While O’Connell has attempted to split reps evenly to see who will take control of the offense, this is expected to be an intense, deep-summer competition. This is simply speculation, but I would expect Murray to be the Week 1 starter unless McCarthy significantly outplays him in the preseason.
4. Atlanta Falcons: Michael Penix Jr. vs. Tua Tagovailoa
For the second time in three seasons, the Atlanta Falcons find themselves involved in one of the most interesting quarterback battles. The former eighth-overall pick, Michael Penix Jr., suffered a devastating knee injury last season, which limited his opportunities under center. The new coaching staff has absolutely no draft-day loyalty to Penix, leading them to sign former Miami Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa.
Tua enters camp with a health advantage, setting the stage for an explosive battle between the two signal-callers. My guess would be that Tua will get the first chance but either quarterback would be on a short leash.
5. Arizona Cardinals: Jacoby Brissett vs. Gardner Minshew vs. Carson Beck
The Arizona Cardinals boast perhaps one of the most unpredictable quarterback rooms in professional football. With a completely wide-open depth chart, Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew could be battling it out for the top spot. Rookie Carson Beck is an incredibly intriguing wild card who the coaching staff will certainly want to test out during the preseason and many believe that he was an excellent draft pick for Arizona that could make an impact sooner rather than later.
Brissett is still the favorite to be the Week 1 starter realistically, but he is also seeking a reworked contract and a pay raise for the 2026 season, so the time he missed during his holdout has at least opened the door for Minshew and Beck.
