In 2025, several MLB teams have massively underperformed. From being one of the top teams predicted to win the World Series in 2025 to being a supposed division leader, there have been several disappointments so far in 2025.
Disappointing MLB Teams So Far in 2025
4. Boston Red Sox (29-32)
The Boston Red Sox are running out of excuses. Almost every season, Boston finds a way to stay mediocre. However, this season is different. With Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman joining the team, there isn’t much of a reason for the Sox to underperform. Boston, which is now in negative territory, has failed to even compete in the AL East. With the Baltimore Orioles massively underperforming, an opportunity was opened for Boston.
However, the Red Sox have been let down by their rotation and some underperforming players, such as Jarren Duran. Even with a monster season from Wilyer Abreu so far, the Red Sox have been underperforming and need to turn around soon.
3. Arizona Diamondbacks (28-31)
The Arizona Diamondbacks themselves have been very confusing. With the big power trio of Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, Eugenio Suarez, and Josh Naylor, one would think that the D-Backs would at least be good. However, as the D-Backs are 2-11 in their last 13 games, Arizona has fallen significantly behind in the NL West and the wild-card race.
For a team that made the World Series just a couple of years ago, missing back-to-back postseasons would be very embarrassing. Not to mention, remember that Arizona added ace Corbin Burnes.
2. Baltimore Orioles (22-36)
The Baltimore Orioles are suffering one of the most embarrassing seasons in recent history. With an electric young offense and a reasonable rotation, many expected Baltimore actually to win the AL East. However, not many expected the Orioles to be the 4th worst team in baseball.
A combination of a very old rotation and some players, such as Gunnar Henderson, underperforming, has led to such a bad season. The sad thing is that now, Baltimore is going to sell at the deadline. With such a good team in 2023 and maybe even a better team in 2024, you can be confused at this start.
1. Atlanta Braves (27-31)
Why exactly are the Atlanta Braves number one on the list? Well, simply put, the Braves were supposed to be the next best thing after the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the World Series. Atlanta is not only losing the NL East, but it is also 5.5 games behind a wild-card spot. With so many good teams in the NL, Atlanta is entering a very critical part of the season.
In addition to this, Atlanta is also very far behind in the NL East, and dare I say, Atlanta has almost no chance of taking the NL East this season. The New York Mets are beast, while the Philadelphia Phillies still looks pretty good. The Braves, at the moment, are 9.5 games behind New York for the NL East. With an abundance of underperforming players, it is easy to see why Atlanta ranks high on this list.
Currently, 11 teams are ahead of Atlanta in the National League. At this moment, the season is about a third done, which is not good for Atlanta. Overall, there are many teams underperforming this season. Many teams that were expected to win the World Series this season or have a chance at doing so have done the opposite. Teams that were favored to win their division are actually last or one of the worst in their division. Sports can be confusing. How exactly is Baltimore that bad? Well, how exactly did the Florida State Seminoles only win two games last season? Sometimes, good teams just lose a lot for strange reasons.
