MLB power rankings

MLB Power Rankings: Week 1

As we enter week 1 of the 2025 MLB season, there remains much hype over each team’s offseason. Much has changed since the end of the 2024 season, players have been traded, players have signed elsewhere and resigned. Some teams have gotten better and others have gotten worse. The question remains: What do the MLB rankings look like just before 2025?

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

Everyone agrees that the Los Angeles Dodgers are the best team in the MLB coming into 2025. Whether that be offense or defense, the Dodgers managed to retain most of their talent plus add more over the offseason. Expect a great year from LA.

2. New York Mets

The New York Mets simply look like a great team in 2025. With the huge addition of Juan Soto and the retaining of Pete Alonso, the Mets are an offensive juggernaut. Not to mention the rotation for New York has a lot of depth. Again, expect greatness in 2025 from New York.

3. Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies were just depressing in the second half of 2024. However, the Phils still should do relatively well in 2025 since they lost just about no one in the offseason. The offseason wasn’t great, but Philly still looks good and still comes in 2025 strong.

4. Baltimore Orioles

Sure, the Baltimore Orioles lost Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander, but that doesn’t mean they’re a terrible team. Still, the Orioles added some power and still have great talent from their young players. The O’s come into 2025 looking to win the AL East.

5. Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves were very mediocre in 2024. However, the Braves had massive injury and underperformance issues, showing they did not reach their full potential. Atlanta did not get much better in the offseason; it probably got worse. However, I still expect Atlanta to rank among the best in the MLB, thanks to their load of offensive talent.

6. Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks were able to win the MLB offseason easily. In addition to acquiring some considerable talent from trades, the D-Backs also managed to sign Corbin Burnes, arguably the best pitcher available in free agency. This team looks strong coming into 2025.

7. San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres pretty much did nothing in the 2024-25 offseason. However, their talent as a team remains. The Padres should be able to at least be a good team in 2025, thanks to the fact that they are still just a great team. Offseason grade: F (big fat one too), however, still expect San Diego to be good in 2025.

8. Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have much to be excited about in 2025. Of course, this team was just another terrible team in 2024. However, a good offseason, which saw Boston acquire Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman, is the reason why this team is very powerful. Past seasons show that Boston hasn’t done too well even with talent. However, this season should be a different story.

9. New York Yankees

Number 9? Bit low, but realistic. Once the New York Yankees lost Gerrit Cole for 2025, this team lost much steam. The Yankees also lost their Mickey Mantle and now face a worrisome season. However, even with all of this, this team should still manage to be good in 2025.

10. Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs got better after this season’s offseason. This team really did not have much of a reason for being a bad team anyway in 2024. With such a great rotation and now a good offense, this team should turn around and grab the NL Central in 2025.

11. Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers were VERY disappointing in 2024. However, don’t expect to see the story to be repeated in 2025. With the addition of Jake Burger and Joc Pederson, this team is too good to fail again.

12. Detroit Tigers

After a magical 2024 season, everyone knows the Detroit Tigers have some potential going into 2025. The Tigers adding some star players in addition to already great talent should get this team a higher ranking than not in 2025.

13. Kansas City Royals

The Royals did not do much in the offseason. However, the team is still talented and shouldn’t collapse after a good 2024 season. KC should compete for the AL Central in 2025.

14. Houston Astros

The decline of the Houston Astros is coming. Of course, the team dominates the AL West every year. However, the story should change in 2025. The Astros hinge their hope on the great Yordan Alvarez and on some promising prospects.

15. Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians did well in 2024. However, Cleveland looks much worse after trading away significant amounts of talent and not getting much in return. Sure, this team is not much worse than other AL Central teams, however, coming into 2025, Cleveland doesn’t look all that good.

16. San Francisco Giants

This is quite the low ranking for the San Francisco Giants. However, since they have been mediocre every year since 2021, the Giants must prove themselves in 2025. 2025, however, looks quite hopeful for the Giants.

17. Milwaukee Brewers

This is a low ranking for a team that won the NL Central last season. However, as is evident, the Milwaukee Brewers decided to allow much of their talent to disappear in the offseason. The Brew Crew should not expect an amazing 2025.

18. Tampa Bay Rays

Are the Tampa Bay Rays going to do badly thanks to their stadium situation? Probably not, the Rays likely aren’t winning the AL East but still can do okay. With a not-bad offseason, the Rays can compete for a Wild Card spot at least.

19. Seattle Mariners

The Mariners had a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad offense in 2024. However, this did not stop them from doing anything about it. The Mariners had a great rotation in 2024. However, two extremes aren’t a good recipe for a good team. Seattle doesn’t look strong coming into 2025.

20. Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are an outdated team that just did not do well in 2024. In 2025, like the Giants, the Jays must prove themselves. For now, the Blue Jays don’t look good coming to begin the MLB season.

21. Los Angeles Angels

Can a good offseason cause a 99-loss team to become good again? Likely not. However, the Los Angeles Angels still did just fine in the offseason and weren’t horrible-looking talent-wise in 2024. Don’t expect a juggernaut. However, this team looks promising, maybe…

22. Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins shouldn’t be that bad in 2025, right? Well no, because they were mediocre last year and look bad again in 2025. Minnesota is weak as it enters 2025.

23. St Lous Cardinals

It’s official! The St. Louis Cardinals are the next team in Missouri to rebuild. The Cardinals must deal with a mediocre team in 2025 and don’t plan on competing. Expect, well, mediocrity from the Cards in 2025.

24. Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds will hope to do well in 2025. However, this team does not look good coming to this season. The offense and rotation both look shaky, and this young team must prove they are not mediocre or worse before they can earn a higher ranking.

25. Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals have somehow managed to become one of the worst teams in the MLB over the years. Even with star talent, the Nationals are going to get punched around in the NL East and don’t look strong for 2025.

26. Pittsburgh Pirates

Imagine having the best young star and then leaving him to rot with a terrible team. That’s what the Pittsburgh Pirates are doing. They did NOT improve coming into 2025 and look terrible offensively. Don’t expect much from this young team this year.

27. Athletics

A good second half does not mean much for the Athletics. This team still has a rotation issue and offensively looks mediocre. What to expect from the Athletics this year? Improvements. This team however isn’t ready for the big stage yet.

28. Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies just don’t look all that good coming in 2025. This team basically fails every season, and this should continue thanks to the fact that the NL West is going to be brutal for them. The Rockies aren’t strong coming into 2025.

29. Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins are pretty much intentionally rebuilding. The hope for Miami is their rotation. However, even then the Marlins don’t have any talent whatsoever to get them anywhere. This team is looking to rebuild in 2025.

30. Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox were terrible in 2024. As the Sox look to rebuild, this team will likely repeat the terrible trend and not do anything more than trade for prospects. The White Sox also will rebuild this year and remain the worst team in the MLB in 2025.

Overall, the exciting season has finally arrived! In 2025, who will dominate the field? This season is bound to be a great one, as some teams will struggle, and others will rise. These rankings will certainly change by the end of 2025.
