After two seasons with the team, the New York Jets release wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
According to Newsday’s Kimberly A. Martin, this release is coming at the request of Marshall himself.
Jets Release Brandon Marshall
The Jets will save $7.5 million by cutting Marshall. He will count $1.875 million against the Jets’ cap in dead money this season.
Marshall’s release is the latest of a string of Jets’ departures. Earlier this week, the Jets cut seven time Pro Bowl corner-back Darelle Revis and center Nick Mangold, who spent 11seasons with the team.
In two seasons with the Jets, Marshall caught 168 passes for 2,290 yards and 17 touchdowns.
This seems to be a mutually beneficial move. The Jets are looking to get younger, while Marshall is looking for a fresh start after winning just five games with the Jets last season. Keep in mind that Marshall has never played on a playoff team, and the clock is ticking on the 32-year-old’s career. This departure from the Jets now gives him a chance to find a team that will hopefully contend for a championship before the end of his career.
It will be interesting to see how much interest the New York Giants have in Marshall. The Giants recently let go of veteran receiver Victor Cruz, and could use a veteran wide-out to be a mentor for Odell Beckham Jr.
In his time with the Jets, Marshall had a side gig as an analyst on Showtime’s hit series Inside the NFL. With the show being taped in the New York area, Marshall was able to balance both jobs with a small amount of travel. If Marshall wants to continue being involved with that show, the Giants may be the best fit for him.
In an 11-year career, Marshall has played four seasons with the Denver Broncos, two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, three seasons with the Chicago Bears, and two seasons with the Jets.
