2026 Heisman Trophy Race: Three Players Leading the Charge

The 2026 college football season is delivering plenty of excitement, and the race for the Heisman Trophy is becoming one of the biggest storylines in the sport. With the regular season moving forward, standout performances are beginning to separate the leading contenders from the rest of the field. This year’s competition is especially interesting because it features an elite wide receiver challenging quarterbacks who have the opportunity to influence games with their arms and decision-making.

Winning the Heisman requires more than impressive statistics. Players must deliver consistently, perform in important games, and help their teams achieve meaningful success. With the competition intensifying, these three players have compelling stories to follow as the season continues. Here’s a closer look at their performances, strengths, and chances of winning college football’s most prestigious individual award.

Three Players Leading the Charge in Heisman Trophy Race

1. Jeremiah Smith

We may be witnessing one of the greatest receivers to walk this planet in college football history. He is tied for first in receptions with 52, ranks second with 984 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns, and averages 18.9 yards per reception.

What makes Jeremiah Smith look even better is that the Ohio State Buckeyes‘ offense has been outstanding this season so far. With Smith on the roster, the Buckeyes don’t even need to find another receiver to count on. When he is on the field, if you throw it to him, he will most likely catch it. That is just how talented he is. His speed and ability to make contested catches are extremely impressive.

The thing is, Smith has not had a down year so far. You would think maybe he has since Ohio State is 6-1 and hasn’t looked as dominant as usual, but no, he has been outstanding so far this season and will probably continue to be outstanding.

2. Darian Mensah

Darian Mensah is viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in college football today for the Miami Hurricanes. He has thrown for 1,764 passing yards, ranking 17th in the league, with 18 passing touchdowns, tied for fourth, and just one interception, tied for 10th. He also has an 89.4 QBR.

Mensah has blown out every one of his opponents so far, but last week against the Florida St Seminoles, they barely survived, winning it in overtime 43-35. Mensah is just hoping they don’t lose any games this season, because that could absolutely change the Heisman race.

I definitely think Mensah will continue to ball out this season, as he is probably the best quarterback in college football right now. If Mensah continues to play like he is playing right now, he could definitely bring the Heisman Trophy to Miami, and maybe even bring a national title.

3. Trinidad Chambliss

Trinidad Chambliss was one of the best quarterbacks in college football a few weeks ago, and he was the top leader for the Heisman Trophy. After getting blown out by the Florida Gators recently, he has definitely fallen a little bit. He has thrown for 1,676 passing yards, ranking 23rd in the league, with 14 passing touchdowns, tied for 20th, and four interceptions, tied for 64th. He also has an 83.5 QBR.

This weekend, the Ole Miss Rebels play the Texas Longhorns, so that will be another difficult game for Chambliss, but I think he can definitely take them down if he performs at his best.

Is Chambliss a Heisman candidate? Definitely. He he has done very well this season so far, and I expect that to continue.
