Week 3 of College Football delivered some heated matchups, shocking wins, rivals, and plenty of statements.
With another wild weekend ahead, the Heisman Trophy race continues to heat up. Quarterbacks remain the front runners. Wide receivers and running backs are making their own cases.
After everything we saw in Week 3, here are five players making their case for the Heisman Trophy.
Heisman Watch Heading Into Week 4
5. WR Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State
Jeremiah Smith did not catch a pass for a touchdown in the game vs Kent State, and it was the first time this season he got less 100 receiving yards. But still it was a big game for Ohio State crushing Kent State in a 59-3 win. Smith may have not had the best day but he got five catches for 85 yards.
Jeremiah Smith also broke an Ohio State record with the all time receiving yards. Smith is always a great player to watch, with how talented he really is. Ohio State takes on Illinois at home this week, which will possibly give Smith a chance to ball out.
4. WR Malachi Toney, Miami Hurricanes
Malachi Toney continues to be a great machine, with his beautiful catches, moves, and speed. He had a great game last week against Wake Forest, with 12 catches for 114 yards, and one touchdown. If Toney continues to shine the way he is right now, he will definitely be in the Heisman conversation.
He has shown he can handle pressure very well throughout the season. Toney last week was just one catch away from breaking a season game record for, which is held by Mike Harley Jr.
Toney has got 12 catch games three times in the last 10 months,which definitely motivates him to do even better, and break that record. Next, the Miami Hurricanes host Central Michigan. Toney should get some great opportunities to have a great game.
3. QB Arch Manning, Texas Longhorns
Arch Manning helped the Texas Longhorns to a win over UTSA. Manning struggled in the game only passing for 164, two touchdowns, and completed 17 of 33 of passes. Texas beat UTSA 30-6.
When Manning left for halftime he got hit several times by the UTSA defenders, which caused him to be in some pain. The victory improved Texas to 3-0. Texas takes on the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium. This will give Manning a real challenge.
2. QB Darian Mensah, Miami Hurricanes
Darian Mensah had a great game against Wake Forest, in the beginning of the game he went 24 of 24 complete passes. Mensah threw for 220 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, and went 30 of 34 completions.
One of the reasons Mensah is having a great season is because of Toney, who is also rising in the Heisman race this season. Mensah leads all FBS in completion rates, and second in passing touchdowns, and has no interceptions this season so far, this is a great reason why Mensah is a top Heisman race candidate.
The game this week for Miami will give Mensah a great chance to bump up those stats, and make him the top candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
1. QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
After a great game against LSU, Trinidad Chambliss has taken away Mensah’s spotlight. Mensah led the Heisman race for over two weeks. When it matters, Chambliss does the best he can.
In the last couple weeks Chambliss has put up Heisman numbers. His stats this season so far are 924 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, two interceptions, 64 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns.
Chambliss has put up crazy stats so far this season, but the remaining games will definitely be a challenge. Ole Miss takes on the Florida Gators, ranked No. 20 in the country. This will definitely give Chambliss a chance to see how good he is.
