Dodgers Midseason Report: First Place, Injuries Galore and a Surprising Slump

Standings & Division Overview

We’re just a little over halfway in the 2025 season, and when we look at the standings right now, things are looking pretty good for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

They’re 55-32, and are 8.5 games ahead of the San Diego Padres, 9 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants, 11.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and uh, do we really have to talk about the Rockies?

But has it been this way all season long? Absolutely not. There were several times when teams were ahead of the Dodgers, but June has been fruitful for the Dodgers as they went 17-10 in the month. In 2024, the Dodgers went 16-10 in June. In 2023, the Dodgers went 12-12 in June. In 2022, the Dodgers went 14-12 in June. The Padres, on the other hand, went 13-15 in June this year, and even after a blockbuster trade to acquire Rafael Devers, the Giants are now 4-10 in that era. The Diamondbacks lost Corbin Burnes, and the Rockies have taken the worst team in the MLB title themselves, when they could’ve given it to the White Sox.

Offensive Leaders & Player Performances

The Dodgers’ current leader in batting average is Will Smith, with an average of .324. Shohei Ohtani leads the team with 30 home runs. Andy Pages has 58 RBIs. Will Smith has an OBP of .425. Ohtani leads with 96 hits.

If anything, though, this year’s biggest disappointment is Mookie Betts. He has an average of .246, has only 9 home runs, and his OBP is at .322. His SLG is also at .375, lower than Miguel Rojas’s. But Mookie Betts is a beast, and I know for a fact that this guy is going to turn it around after the All-Star break.

Pitching Stats & Injuries

On the pitching side of things, Yoshinobu Yamamoto leads the team in wins (8), ERA (2.51), and strikeouts (109). Tanner Scott leads in saves with 18. Alex Vesia leads with 16 holds. Unfortunately, though, the Dodgers currently have Blake Treinen, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Michael Kopech, Justin Jarvis, Roki Sasaki, Tony Gonsolin, Evan Phillips, Kyle Hurt, Brusdar Graterol, River Ryan, Giovanny Gallegos, Michael Grove, Gavin Stone, and Octavio Becerra on the IL. The only non-pitcher on the IL would be Max Muncy, who just entered the IL.

Defense & Fielding

On the defensive side of things, Max Muncy leads the team with 10 errors, Andy Pages is next with 5, and Mookie comes 3rd with 4. Betts leads in defensive wins above replacement with 1.3, Andy Pages comes 2nd, and Will Smith comes 3rd. Betts, Muncy, and Edman have the most assists on the team. Smith and Freeman have more than 500 putouts this season and lead the team.

Prospects Update

Rushing, who was called up May 14, has an average of .212, 11 hits, 2 doubles, 1 homerun, and 9 RBIs through 18 games this season.

Josue De Paula is the current #1 prospect for the Dodgers.

Farewell to Key Veterans

As the season went on, lots of tough decisions were made to let go of some key players throughout the last decade. In order to call up Rushing, Barnes had to be DFA’d. To activate Tommy Edman, Chris Taylor had to be released.

Austin Barnes

As a Dodger, Barnes had an average of .223, 35 total home runs, 162 RBIs, and 338 hits. He did not play more than 100 games aside from 2017 and 2018, where he played 102 and 100, respectively. More than the offense, Barnes was Kershaw’s preferred catcher, and caught 551 of Kershaw’s 3000 strikeouts, which was the second most of all catchers that have caught any of Kershaw’s strikeouts. Will Smith was all the way back at #5. #1 was AJ Ellis. A lot of comments on last night’s 3000 strikeout posts were saying stuff like, “Barnes should’ve been there.” Barnes was signed to a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants 4 days ago.

Chris Taylor

As a Dodger, Taylor had a batting average of .250, 108 total home runs, 423 RBIs, and 790 hits. Out of 10 seasons, there were only 3 where he played fewer than 100 games. In the playoffs, he had a batting average of .247 and 9 home runs, including one that sent the Dodgers past the Cardinals in the Wild Card series. Personally, I remember jumping up and down after that one. I was absolutely ecstatic. He was also named the NLCS MVP in 2017. I’m curious if you have any Chris Taylor memories. Share them down below. Chris Taylor signed a major league contract with the Angels almost immediately after being released.

All-Star Game Update

For the All-Star Game, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith have been named starters for the Dodgers. The reserves have not been named yet.

Team Metrics & Projections

The Dodgers have the 4th best run differential in the MLB this season. At this point in the season, the Dodgers have a 92.9% chance to clinch a bye, and a 99.9% chance of making the playoffs. They have a 23.2% chance of winning the World Series. They are projected to get to 99 wins and 62 losses.

Player OPS wRC+ Total WAR (Fangraphs)
Shohei Ohtani 1.015 173 4.3
Will Smith .972 171 3.2
Freddie Freeman .881 148 2.2
Andy Pages .839 131 3.0

Attendance Records

The Dodgers continue to dominate attendance. The Dodgers lead all teams in total attendance for the 2025 season. Their average attendance of 50,703 is also the highest in baseball. They have surpassed 2 million in attendance in just 40 home games, setting a new franchise record for reaching that mark the quickest. With 38 home games remaining, the Dodgers are on pace to draw 4 million fans for the first time in franchise history.
