Damien Williams Should’ve Won Super Bowl MVP

For the first time in 50 years, the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions. It was a very good game as the Chiefs marched back from a ten-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Miami. Head coach Andy Reid finally got what he deserved, but Patrick Mahomes got what he didn’t deserve. Yes, Mahomes won the Super Bowl MVP but running back Damien Williams had a much stronger case to win it than any other player. Many fans and players don’t care who won the MVP, as long as the team won the Lombardi Trophy. Even though they did win, people are still talking about the Super Bowl MVP. Here’s the case on why Williams should have won it instead of Mahomes.

Damien Williams Should’ve Won Super Bowl MVP

Why Williams Should’ve Won It

Williams played a huge role in the Chiefs winning their second Super Bowl in franchise history. When things weren’t looking good, he was one of the bright spots for the whole game. The 49ers didn’t focus on Williams coming into the game because they were too worried about Mahomes and rightfully so.

Williams averaged 6.1 yards per carry, which was just under two yards more the 49ers were giving up the whole year. He ran for 104 yards with a touchdown and caught four balls for 29 yards and a touchdown. Williams also put the game away with a 38-yard touchdown that proved to seal the deal. He became the only player in Super Bowl history to have 100+ rushing yards and a receiving touchdown. Damien was the go-to guy and he showed up when they needed him. He said he didn’t care about winning it, he just wanted a Super Bowl and that’s what he got.

Why Mahomes Shouldn’t Have Won It

Yes, Mahomes helped facilitate the comeback but if it wasn’t for Williams, that might not have happened. Mahomes didn’t play his best brand of football for three and a half quarters. He finished with a 78.1 passer rating, which was the lowest by a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. He threw for under three hundred yards and threw two awful picks, one on a pass thrown straight to Fred Warner and one that was behind Tyreek Hill as he tried to catch it but it tipped off of his hands right to Tarvarius Moore. Mahomes did do his fair share but it didn’t seem like an MVP worthy performance.

The End Of Another Season

Even though Williams deserved the Super Bowl MVP, nobody is overlooking the fact that he put on a show. Everyone saw what he could do but winning the Super Bowl was the top priority. The Chiefs had a great ending to a great story. Winning a Super Bowl and maybe even not winning the MVP will motivate him even more. If it does, he will be a dangerous back in this league for years to come. Mahomes is very young and the Chiefs have a complete team around him. They aren’t going anywhere and they will be a force for years to come.
