The latest edition of Carolina Panthers training camp is officially underway, and the energy in Charlotte is electric as the team builds its identity for the upcoming season. As the coaching staff attempts to install an aggressive, high-flying offense, three specific skill-position players are generating substantial buzz through their explosive practice habits and consistency. With the franchise eager to take a massive step forward in the NFC South, the chemistry building during this year’s intense Panthers training camp sessions indicate that the offense might have much more bite than critics expect.
Carolina Panthers Training Camp Standouts
Jonathon Brooks Looks Fully Unleashed and Explosive
After battling through long rehab roads, running back Jonathon Brooks enters the summer fully healthy and is flashing elite playmaking capabilities. The former high draft choice is currently sitting second on the running back depth chart behind Chuba Hubbard but is quickly closing the gap with his lightning-fast burst during Panthers training camp.
Observers at Panthers training camp have routinely noted his ability to making a single cut and hit top-end gear immediately during 11-on-11 drills. Brooks is also showing great nuance coming out of the backfield as a receiving threat, giving quarterback Bryce Young a reliable safety valve.
In a surprise twist, special teams coordinator Tracy Smith even noted that Brooks has shown significant “promise” when getting work in the kickoff return rotation. The coaching staff is intent on establishing a physical, balanced rushing attack. Brooks’ standout performances prove his is ready to shoulder a heavy load in the backfield.
Xavier Legette Flips the Script with Power and Speed
Following a difficult first couple of years that left critics questioning his fit, former first-round pick Xavier Legette is putting together a phenomenal summer response. Despite a brief scare when he left practice to be evaluated by trainers, Legette has been cleared and has been displaying massive athletic growth throughout Panthers training camp.
Head coach Dave Canales specifically praised his growth, noting that Legette looks both incredibly fast and powerful through his routes. Unlike last season where mental miscues stalled Legette’s momentum, he now shows full mastery of the nuances in third-down and red-zone schemes. Legette has also become a mismatch nightmare in short-to-intermediate spaces, snagging several highly contested aerial balls.
Legette’s development is critical for Carolina, especially after a season-ending injury to rookie Chris Brazzell opened up targets. If Legette maintains his strong form, he stands as a favorite to secure a major volume share alongside Tetairoa McMillan and a potential breakout star in Jalen Coker.
Ja’seem Reed Vaults Up the Depth Chart as a Camp Dark Horse
Perhaps the most exciting revelation of the entire summer is wideout Ja’seem Reed. After spending his rookie year grinding away on the practice squad, the former Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Year is aggressively fighting his way toward a 53-man roster spot by dominating daily sessions at Panthers training camp.
Reed has become a favorite of the coaching staff because he simply “keeps making plays” whenever the football is zipped in his direction. With injuries shifting the wide receiver room, Reed has capitalized on reps behind the top unit, solidifying himself as a reliable target. He backed up his early Panthers training camp praise by getting live return work and catching a touchdown during Carolina’s preseason opener.
As an undrafted free agent who spent his first season on the fringes, Reed’s consistency on the practice field is making it incredibly difficult for the front office to consider leaving him off the final roster. If he has another strong showing against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, the Panthers may have no choice but to keep him on the active 53-man roster, which looks like a good problem to have.
