All you need to know about the BIG3 Basketball League

The BIG3 Basketball league was founded in 2017 by rapper/actor Ice Cube. It is a league where they play a 3 on 3 half-court game with the first team to score 50 points wins. The teams are made up of retired NBA players and players from overseas. The commissioner of the basketball league is former NBA Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler. It’s a competitive league in which former NBA players can get together and do what they have done for their entire careers. I will be breaking down each team in the basketball league with their rosters.

3 Headed Monsters

Coach: Gary Payton
Captain: Rashard Lewis
Co-Captain: Reggie Evans
Co-Captain: Mahmoud Abul-Rauf
Kwame Brown
Salim Stoudamire
Qyntel Woods

The 3 Headed Monsters are coached by Gary Payton who had a very successful career and was one of the best point guards of his generation. The 3 Headed Monsters reached the Championship Game last season before coming up just short. They had the MVP of the league in Rashard Lewis who had an unbelievable season in the BIG3. They bring back 3 players from last year’s team including Lewis and they add the 2017 rebounding champ in Reggie Evans.

3’s Company

Coach: Michael Cooper
Captain: DerMarr Johnson
Co-Captain: Baron Davis
Co-Captain: Drew Gooden
Andre Emmett
Jason Maxiell
Derrick Byars

The 3’s Company are coached by Michael Cooper who was the head coach of the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA. Cooper also won 5 championships with the Los Angeles Lakers during their showtime era. They started out their 2017 season slow before finishing the season with a 3 – 5 record. DerMarr Johnson took over as the captain of the team and brought in veterans Baron Davis and Drew Gooden as his co-captains in effort to have a better season.

Ball Hogs

Coach: Rick Barry
Captain: Brian Scalabrine
Co-Captain: Josh Childress
Co-Captain: DeShawn Stevenson
Andre Owens
Corsley Edwards
Jermaine Taylor

The Ball Hogs are coached by Rick Barry who was one of the best players in his generation and has his number retired by the Golden State Warriors. The Ball Hogs had a 2 – 6 record last season but come into this season with high expectations. They are returning the best 3-point shooter in the league is DeShawn Stevenson who is also a defensive game changer. They also drafted Andrew Owens with the number 1 overall pick in the draft. Andrew Owens played for 3’s Company last season and had a stellar season which landed him with the number 1 pick. They also have Josh Childress whose playing career was an average career where he played in the NBA and overseas.

Ghost Ballers

Coach: George Gervin
Captain: Mike Bibby
Co-Captain: Ricky Davis
Co-Captain: Carlos Boozer
Lee Nailon
Marcus Banks
Mario West

The Ghost Ballers are coach by an NBA Hall of Famer in George Gervin. They are led by the combination of Mike Bibby, Ricky Davis, and Carlos Boozer. Mike Bibby has been in the news lately for his pictures of his workout regime and how jacked he has gotten since retiring from the NBA. They finished third in the league last season and are returning their leaders in Mike Bibby and Ricky Davis while adding a veteran force in the paint in Carlos Boozer. Look for the Ghost Ballers to have a nice season and to make a run for a championship.

Killer 3’s

Coach: Charles Oakley
Captain: Chauncey Billups
Co-Captain: Stephen Jackson
Co-Captain: Metta World Peace
Alan Anderson
Ryan Hollins
Mike James

The Killer 3’s are coached by longtime Knick Charles Oakley who was one of the toughest players on the court in his time. They are led by veterans Chauncey Billups, Stephen Jackson, and Metta World Peace. Those 3 guys have their share on expierence in the NBA and have had major success in the playoffs and winning championships. Despite their 2 – 6 record last season the Killer 3’s were in every game but ended up coming just short with their hard nose style they played to follow their head coach Charles Oakley.

Power

Coach: Nancy Lieberman
Captain: Corey Maggette
Co-Captain: Cuttino Mobley
Co-Captain: Glen Davis
Chris Anderson
Quentin Richardson
Ryan Gomes

Power is led by their coach Nancy Lieberman who played and coach in the WNBA as well as being an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings and is regarded as one of the greatest women figures in American history. After having a 4 – 4 first season they have made some significant changes in their new head coach and their captain Corey Maggette who missed most of the season last year. They are returning one of the leading scorers in the league in Ricky Davis while adding some much-needed interior presence in Glen Davis and Chris Anderson who can provide defensive intensity down low.

Tri-State

Coach: Julius Erving
Captain: Jermaine O’Neal
Co-Captain: Amar’e Stoudemire
Co-Captain: Nate Robinson
David Hawkins
Robert Hite
Bonzi Wells

Tri-State is led by one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA in Julius Erving who changed the game. They have revamped their roster with the additions of Amar’e Stoudemire and Nate Robinson as co-captains. Jermaine O’Neal and Stoudemire give them a dominate presence in the paint on both ends of the floor while Nate Robinson and David Hawkins give them scoring from anywhere on the floor and toughness. Bonzi Wells also returns to the team as one of the top rebounders and steals leaders in the league as a fan favorite.

Trilogy

Coach: Rick Mahorn
Captain: Kenyon Martin
Co-Captain: Al Harrington
Co-Captain: Rashad McCants
James White
Dion Glover
Dahntay Jones

Trilogy is coach by Rick Mahorn who played in the NBA and is now a radio analyst for the Detroit Pistons and is a co-host on SiriusXM NBA radio. Trilogy are the defending champions in the BIG3 Basketball League and our on a mission this season to repeat. They are lead by their 2 inside players Kenyon Martin and Al Harrington. Rashad McCants was a star in college but never worked out in the NBA but pairing him and James White add a dynamic scoring duo for the team. Dahntay Jones is fresh off a NBA final run with the Cleveland Cavaliers just over a year ago. They were undefeated last season on their way to a championship but they will have a target on their back this season.
