Week 9 must-watch matchups

5 Must-Watch Matchups In College Football Week 9

Over the past three weeks, at least six ranked teams have lost, causing major changes in the AP Poll and reshaping the College Football Playoff picture. Week 9 matters not only for the AP Top 25 but for all FBS teams, as the selection committee will release its first College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, November 3.

With the stakes high, this week’s must-watch matchups could heavily influence the committee’s initial rankings and significantly shape the playoff race. As a result, a win this week could boost their playoff resume, while a loss could hurt their chances of making the 12-team playoff. These must-watch matchups have high stakes and bring excitement, storylines, and upset potential.

Week 9 Must-Watch Matchups

1. No. 22 Arizona vs. No. 13 Texas Tech

No. 22 Arizona travels to take on No. 13 Texas Tech at noon on Saturday in a major Big 12 matchup. Due to both teams having one loss in conference play, this game will be pivotal in determining who could make the Big 12 Conference Championship game and increase their chances of making the College Football Playoff.
Arizona has become a sleeper in the Big 12 race, winning every game since its Week 2 loss to BYU. It has beaten opponents by 10 or more points, including a blowout win over Cincinnati, which Texas Tech beat last week. A big reason for its resurgence has been its offense: the Wildcats have averaged 36.1 points, 459.4 yards, and 310.9 passing yards per game, all ranking in the top 25 nationally. Quarterback Noah Fifita has led this offense, throwing 18 touchdowns for 2,064 yards and rushing for two touchdowns. The defense has also been stout, allowing fewer than 17 points per game, ranking 23rd in the country.
Texas Tech comes off an upset loss to Cincinnati last week, leaving it vulnerable in the race to make its conference championship game and the Playoff. Despite the loss, the Red Raiders have been in this position before, as they lost their first game of the season before running the table to win their conference championship game and clinch a Playoff berth last season. They have strengths on both sides of the ball: the offense has averaged 35.9 points, and the defense has allowed 20.4 points per game while ranking among the country’s best run defenses, allowing 106.7 yards per game.
With both teams fighting to stay in the conference title race and strengthen their Playoff cases, this matchup carries major implications. A second conference loss would make either team’s path to the Big 12 Championship Game more difficult, raising the stakes for Saturday’s showdown. With Arizona’s explosive offense facing Texas Tech’s formidable run defense, this game is one of this week’s must-watch matchups.

2. No. 17 Florida vs. No. 3 Georgia

This is the second and final matchup between ranked opponents in Week 9, as No. 17 Florida takes on No. 3 Georgia at 3:30 p.m. in Athens, Georgia, with both teams coming off bye weeks last week. Despite being a big favorite, the Bulldogs should be on upset alert this week, a trend evident over the last three weeks.
After back-to-back losses that dropped Florida from a top-10 team to unranked, it returned to the top 25 with an upset road win over Texas two weeks ago, keeping its playoff hopes alive. Under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, the Gators have one of the nation’s highest-scoring offenses, averaging 39.6 points per game and ranking ninth nationally. Running back Jadan Baugh has led the unit with 763 yards on 135 carries and 13 touchdowns, tying for fourth-most in the nation. Despite defensive struggles, the Gators have found momentum heading into this game, forcing a game-winning turnover, limiting Texas to a 2-10 third-down efficiency, and giving up only 24 points.
Unlike Florida, Georgia desperately needed its bye week to regroup after an upset loss to Auburn in its last game, which dropped it out of the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll. Despite the loss two weeks ago, the Bulldogs have been among the country’s best teams, ranking in the top 40 in every offensive and defensive category. Their offense, led by quarterback Gunner Stockton, has averaged 43 points per game, ranking third nationally, while its defense allows 15.9 points per game.  They are battle-tested, having already beaten Alabama on the road, so they will face a Florida team that has already beaten two top-25 teams.
The Gators desperately need this win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, while the Bulldogs need to stay on track for the SEC Championship game and strengthen their case ahead of the selection committee’s initial rankings. With Florida looking to pull off another upset and Georgia aiming to get back on track ahead of a three-game stretch against ranked opponents, this game has all the ingredients for one of Week 9’s must-watch matchups.

3. No. 6 Utah vs. Cincinnati

Another Big 12 matchup with plenty of implications as No. 6 Utah travels to face an unranked Cincinnati team looking to build on last week’s upset of Texas Tech at 3:45 p.m. The outcome will matter for the Big 12 race, as a Utah loss could add more chaos to the conference.
Utah enters this game after a statement win last week, beating then-No. 14 Houston to remain undefeated and top the Big 12 standings. It has one of the country’s best offenses, ranking ninth in total offense with 478.4 yards per game, led by quarterback Devon Dampier. Despite passing struggles that led to two interceptions against Houston, he made up for it on the ground, rushing for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The Utes’ defense also ranks ninth, giving up just 14.6 points per game, and in their last game, they forced a game-changing fumble that put them in prime position to win.
Cincinnati is also coming off its biggest win of the season, as it upset then-No.8 Texas Tech at home to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. The Bearcats’ offense ranks 20th nationally, averaging 455.3 yards, and it has one of the country’s best running games, led by running back Cole Tabb, who leads the nation with 9.6 yards per carry. The Bearcats also average 234.6 yards per game, the eighth-best in the country. Despite its defensive struggles this season, Cincinnati enters the matchup against Utah with momentum after forcing three turnovers against the Red Raiders last week. The Bearcats have averaged 1.5 takeaways per game, and their running game could be key to another upset.

Utah will look to protect its unbeaten record, maintain its position atop the Big 12, and strengthen its Playoff résumé before facing rival BYU next week. Cincinnati, meanwhile, can build on its upset win, strengthen its case for consideration in the committee’s rankings, and improve its position in the conference race. This is one of the week’s must-watch matchups because of the upset potential and its significance in a loaded Big 12 race.

4. No. 2 Ohio State vs. USC

No. 2 Ohio State travels to the West Coast to face USC at 7:30 p.m. in one of Week 9’s must-watch matchups. Despite USC’s playoff hopes being nearly dead, it has a huge opportunity not only to get its biggest win under Lincoln Riley but also to revive its season with an upset over an Ohio State team facing plenty of offensive questions.

The Buckeyes are coming off their bye week after defeating Indiana two weeks ago in a rematch of last year’s Big Ten championship game, keeping them undefeated in the Big Ten. However, the win came at a cost: starting quarterback Julian Sayin suffered a throwing-arm injury that will keep him out indefinitely. As a result, it remains to be seen who will start under center for Ohio State as quarterbacks Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair compete for the role. Sayin’s absence is a huge loss for an offense ranked 10th nationally, averaging 476.3 yards and 39.3 points per game. It will also put more pressure on the elite defense, which has allowed 13.4 points per game.

Despite an upset loss to Wisconsin last week, the Trojans’ offense has been one of the Big 10’s best, averaging 434.5 yards and 303.6 passing yards per game, second in the conference. Quarterback Jayden Maiava leads the unit, throwing 18 touchdowns for 2,045 yards. The offense will be key to keeping up with the Buckeyes, as their defense has let them down, ranking sixth-worst in total defense among the 18 Big Ten teams. However, this unit will need to play a role, as it forced at least one turnover in four of its six wins.

USC has the home-field advantage and the fewest questions offensively, giving it a chance to pull off the upset. However, Ohio State has the talent to remain a championship contender without Sayin, and it will be interesting to see how the team operates without him. This game will be a key factor in the committee’s decision-making process. With many storylines and upset potential, this primetime showdown is one of Week 9’s must-watch matchups.

5. No. 1 Miami vs. North Carolina

To cap off Week 9’s must-watch matchups, the best team in the country, the Miami Hurricanes, meet the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at 7:30 p.m. in a big ACC showdown. With the selection committee set to release its first College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, this matchup has major implications for the playoff race as Miami looks to keep its top spot.

The Hurricanes have been one of the country’s most consistent teams, as one of the remaining three undefeated teams. A big reason is their explosive offense, which leads the nation in scoring and total offense, with 49 points and 551.9 yards per game. Heisman Trophy contenders quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney lead the team, and they’ve been among the country’s best quarterback-wide receiver duos. However, Miami’s defense has shown vulnerabilities, as its pass defense has allowed 267.8 yards per game, ranking 118th nationally. This will be key if North Carolina wants to have any chance of pulling off the upset.

Despite a 4-3 record, North Carolina has progressed in head coach Bill Belichick’s second season, already matching last season’s win total. The Tar Heels have also proven they can compete with strong opponents, beating TCU, previously ranked Pitt, and reigning ACC champion Duke, while giving Notre Dame an upset scare despite the loss. Their defense has been stout this season, allowing 19.3 points, ranking fourth in the ACC, while averaging a turnover per game. The offense has struggled this season, ranking among the worst in the ACC. The Tar Heels will need to play their best, especially in the passing game, to exploit Miami’s vulnerable pass defense.

The Hurricanes must win to keep their No.1 ranking ahead of next week’s showdown with Notre Dame. North Carolina has a huge opportunity to get its biggest win of the Belichick tenure, keep its slim hopes of making the ACC Championship game alive, and spoil Miami’s perfect season. With Miami’s high-powered offense facing North Carolina’s stout defense, which has helped it win games, this game is one of the must-watch matchups in Week 9.
