Is Darian Mensah quietly becoming the best quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft?

Is Darian Mensah Quietly the Best QB in the 2027 NFL Draft?

When the 2027 quarterback class was being sized up over the summer, most of the attention went to Arch Manning, Dante Moore, and a handful of other big-name passers with blue-chip pedigrees, while Darian Mensah was viewed as a productive transfer still waiting for his signature moment on the national stage.

Eight games into his first season at Miami, that view has changed dramatically, as the redshirt junior has guided the top-ranked Hurricanes to an 8-0 start while completing 80.7% of his passes for 2,425 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just one interception.

Is Darian Mensah Actually the Best QB in the 2027 NFL Draft?

From Third String to ACC Champion

Mensah’s path has been anything but conventional, as the San Luis Obispo native entered 2024 as Tulane’s third-string quarterback before Jon Sumrall handed him the keys ahead of the opener.

He announced himself in only his second career start, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns against No. 16 Kansas State in a 34-27 loss that showed off both his downfield touch and the ball-security issues that still follow him, and he finished the year with 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns before taking his talents to Durham.

At Duke, Mensah took his game to another level, throwing for a school-record 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns against only six interceptions. His defining regular-season performance came at Clemson, where he threw for 361 yards and four touchdowns, led a game-winning drive from his own 6-yard line in the closing minutes, and then threw the two-point conversion that sealed a 46-45 victory, Duke’s first win in Death Valley since 1980.

He went on to earn MVP honors in an overtime upset of Virginia in the ACC Championship Game and again in the Sun Bowl after a four-touchdown performance against Arizona State.

Why Mensah Has a Case for QB1

Accuracy has always been the foundation of Mensah’s game, but at Miami it has bordered on absurd, as he opened the season by completing 27 of 30 throws for 401 yards and five touchdowns at Stanford and later set an ACC record with 24 consecutive completions against Wake Forest.

His latest test came Saturday night in Chapel Hill, where Bill Belichick’s North Carolina squad pushed the Hurricanes to the final minute, and Mensah answered by completing 22 of 29 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover, capped by a 9-yard strike to Malachi Toney that gave Miami a 10-point cushion with under three minutes to play.

The analytics back up the eye test, as Mensah’s 99.9 PFN Impact score leads every quarterback in the FBS and would stand as the highest mark ever recorded at the college level if it holds through season’s end. Fair questions remain about whether his velocity holds up when he has to drive the ball into tight NFL windows, and skeptics will point out that Miami’s schedule has been on the lighter side to this point.

That is exactly why Saturday’s trip to South Bend carries so much weight. With more than 30 career starts already on his résumé and a track record of delivering in the biggest moments, Mensah may be the safest quarterback in this class, and if he leaves Notre Dame Stadium with Miami still unbeaten, the word “quietly” may not apply much longer.

The Last Word

Mensah has all the momentum he needs to make a serious push for QB1, though he still has ground to make up on Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestemaker, who remains the industry favorite at the position.

A win in South Bend would do more than cement Miami as a true college football powerhouse, because it would also prove that Mensah can win against the toughest opponent left on the Hurricanes’ schedule before the College Football Playoff.

Once Miami gets past Notre Dame, a favorable closing stretch gives Mensah the chance to keep stacking production and showing his game to the NFL scouts in attendance each week.

The playoff will be another story, as the Hurricanes chase the national championship that slipped through their fingers a season ago, and that run would give Mensah one final stage to prove he belongs at the top of the class.

He has also become one of the favorites in a Heisman race crowded with some of the sport’s best talent, and an undefeated season would only strengthen his case. That kind of hardware, paired with a perfect record, could be exactly what pushes Mensah past Mestemaker and into the QB1 spot for the 2027 NFL Draft.
