The Boston Red Sox have an important offseason ahead as they look to build a roster capable of competing for a World Series title in 2027. With a talented group of young players already in place, Boston could take another step forward by adding proven veterans through free agency. Improving power at the plate and strengthening the starting rotation should be top priorities.
The 2026-27 free-agent market could offer several opportunities to address those needs, although contract demands and competition from other teams will play a major role.
Three Free Agent Bats the Red Sox Must Target
1. Seiya Suzuki
Suzuki came from Japan in 2022 and signed a five-year $85 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, and now that deal is expiring. There are many places for the 32-year-old slugger to go, rather than signing a new deal to stay with Chicago.
Since Suzuki arrived in the MLB, he has developed into one of the best players in the league, which makes him a big target for many teams. The Red Sox were previously linked to Suzuki before he went to the Cubs.
Now they may get a second chance to bring the star to the team, rather than losing out on him again. The Red Sox could definitely use a player like Suzuki and he would definitely upgrade their roster. He might be 32 years old, but he can still play for a couple more seasons.

2. Randy Arozarena
Arozarena has spent the last two and a half seasons with the Seattle Mariners, since getting traded by the Tampa Bay Rays at the 2024 trade deadline. Arozarena hit .281 with 26 home runs, 79 RBIs, and a .865 OPS, making him an attractive offensive target for the Red Sox.
Arozarena has played well in Fenway Park when he has played against the Red Sox, which makes him a big target for Boston. The Red Sox could certainly use the 32-year-old Arozarena on their roster.
If the Red Sox were to land Arozarena in free agency, that would be a big deal. He could help them in the postseason, and maybe lead them back to the World Series. Arozarena has had an outstanding career. Bringing Arozarena’s proven track record to Boston, where he could upgrade the roster and boost the team’s winning percentage would be huge for a Red Sox team that is close to competing for championships.
3. Brandon Lowe
Lowe would be just as appealing as Arozarena and Suzuki. Lowe is a two-time All-Star, and he is averaging about 31 home runs in the last two seasons.
Lowe might not be a huge upgrade like the others, but bringing in power is a good thing to do, and Lowe is a player who can hit 30 home runs, so he is definitely a player that the Red Sox can use in their starting lineup.
Lowe will most certainly be a player that many teams will go after, so the Red Sox will need to act fast and bring in the star slugger. The good thing is the Red Sox can afford him this offseason, and some other teams just can’t afford him.
It will take some notable acquisitions for Boston to compete with a Rays team that won the American League in 2026 and potentially the World Series as well.
