Five weeks into the college football season, the Atlantic Coast Conference has officially entered a state of beautiful, unpredictable madness. If you thought you were starting to figure out the conference, Week 5 blew those assumptions out of the water. From statement blowouts in legendary stadiums to a devastating injury that alters a dark-horse championship run, the hierarchy is morphing by the minute.
As we go further into October, predicting who will join the conference elite in Charlotte is an exercise in volatility. This definitive look at the top 10 of the ACC football power rankings dissects the contenders, the pretenders, and the teams desperately looking for answers.
ACC Football Power Rankings Week 6
1. Miami Hurricanes (5-0, 3-0 ACC)
There is no debate at the top of the ACC football power rankings. The Miami Hurricanes went into Death Valley and completely dismantled the Clemson Tigers in a 41-13 blowout victory. Darian Mensah operated the offense with surgical precision, while the defensive line completely suffocated the Tigers. Entering their bye week, Miami looks entirely unrivaled with Mensah leading the way. It is their conference to lose.
2. Duke Blue Devils (4-0, 1-0 ACC)
Manny Diaz’s squad enjoyed a restful bye week and watched the teams around them deal with chaos. Armed with an elite defense that has surrendered just 44 points all season, the undefeated Duke Blue Devils hold a premium spot in the ACC football power rankings. They return to action this weekend in a high-stakes road game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
3. Pittsburgh Panthers (5-0, 2-0 ACC)
The Pittsburgh Panthers proved their mettle with a gutsy, dramatic 35-33 road victory at Lane Stadium against the Virginia Tech Hokies. However, the victory was heavily overshadowed by a brutal blow. Starting quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a season-ending ACL tear. While Pitt’s defense and opportunistic special teams keep them near the top of our ACC football power rankings, their offensive identity must now be rebuilt overnight under backup Holden Geriner. A fascinating battle with an improved North Carolina Tar Heels team awaits.
4. Wake Forest (4-1, 2-1 ACC)
If you want a team flying under the radar that looks lethal, look no further than Winston-Salem. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons put on an absolute clinic by crushing the Stanford Cardinal 57-3. Gio Lopez accounted for five touchdowns while the defense allowed a meager 49 rushing yards. Wake Forest is playing high-level, complementary football and closing fast on Pitt and Duke.
5. SMU Mustangs (4-1, 2-1 ACC)
The SMU Mustangs navigated a literal and figurative storm, grinding out a 25-16 win over the Boston College Eagles in torrential downpours. They have physical depth, but they will need to discover an extra gear through the air to stay in the title conversation.
6. Florida State Seminoles (3-2, 1-1 ACC)
Don’t look now, but the Florida State Seminoles are showing signs of life. FSU’s defense completely woke up in a dominant 38-7 routing of the Virginia Cavaliers, scoring 38 unanswered points. It’s a long climb back, but the trajectory is pointing upward.
7. Virginia Tech Hokies (4-1, 1-1 ACC)
Falling behind 14-0 early against Pitt doomed the Hokies, despite a furious second-half rally. Virginia Tech has the athleticism to compete with anyone, but self-inflicted mistakes are preventing a true breakthrough.
8. Clemson Tigers (3-2, 2-1 ACC)
Head coach Dabo Swinney insisted post-game that his team is “right there”, but the film tells a different story. Getting embarrassed on your home turf by Miami exposed a massive bridge to cross if Clemson wants to find itself back in national relevance. They are well out of the top-five in this week’s ACC football power rankings, but the schedule softens for Clemson considerably from here on out, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can take advantage of it.
9. Virginia Cavaliers (3-2, 1-1 ACC)
After an encouraging start to autumn, Virginia hit a wall against FSU. Their offensive line depth is reaching a critical threshold, and things won’t get any easier as conference play intensifies. However, Virginia holds on to a spot in the top 10 of our ACC football power rankings for now.
10. NC State Wolfpack (3-2, 1-1 ACC)
The NC State Wolfpack secured a vital, gritty 31-28 victory over the Louisville Cardinals to stabilize their season. Winning ugly is still a win, but they face a monumental task next week against a surging Wake Forest squad. The Wolfpack claim the final spot in the top 10 of our Week 6 ACC football power rankings.
