Toronto Maple Leafs Looking To Bounce Back After Missing The Playoffs Last Season

Toronto Maple Leafs fans have reason to feel excited as a result of the recent off-season moves engineered by newly hired General Manager John Chayka.

Looking to rebound after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016, management made their first big move on June 29th, when they greatly improved the Leafs blue line in a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning which saw the Leafs deal away their 2026 fifth-round draft pick to the Lightning in exchange for offensive minded defenceman Darren Raddysh, who at 30 years of age, is coming off a career season which saw him score 22 goals, 70 points and a solid plus/minus of +21.

Showing just how much he wants to be a Leaf, Raddysh proceeded to sign an eight-year contract extension.

“We are thrilled to add a defenceman of Darren’s caliber to our organization,” Chayka said. “Darren has emerged as one of the NHL’s premiere two-way defenceman, combining elite puck-moving ability with pose, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones. He strengthens our blue line in every situation and is exactly the type of player we want helping lead this team.”

Raddysh represents another puck moving defenceman who improves the power-play and can log over 20 minutes of ice time per game. He is the exact kind of defenceman the Leafs need to be successful.

Leafs Win 2026 Draft Lottery and Take Forward Gavin McKenna

It was a huge moment for the Leafs organization when back on May 16th, they managed to defy the odds and win the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery which eventually resulted in the Leafs drafting first overall a promising star forward in 18 year-old phenom Gavin McKenna.

The Leafs, who last drafted 1st overall in 2016, had this year an 8.5 percent chance of winning the draft lottery and that’s exactly what they did.

“You need some luck and we got it tonight,” Chayka said. “It’s a long road ahead, of course, and lots of work to do still, but when you get a first overall pick, it’s a monumental type of opportunity. I think it’s a really good draft, and a lot of good players. It’s an honor to pick one overall.”

In what this year was a talented rich 2026 NHL draft, which saw forwards McKenna and Ivar Stenberg finish as a consensus pick among scouts as the best player to draft, the Leafs to one one’s surprise made it official when they kicked off the June 26-27 NHL Draft at KeyBank Center in Buffalo by as already mentioned drafting McKenna first overall. Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, McKenna played this past season NCAA hockey for Penn State where he produced 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) along with 36 PIM’s in 35 games played.

McKenna has often been compared to such young star players as Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard and San Jose Sharks Macklin Celebrini. This young phenom will naturally make the Leafs more lethal offensively as he will fill the shoes which were never filled after forward Mitch Marner left the Leafs a year ago.

Upon being drafted, McKenna had some heavy praise towards Leafs fans for their strong passion and sacrifice in taking the time in driving down to KeyBank Center to be present when McKenna was drafted.

He also touched upon the possibility of playing on the same line as current Leafs captain Auston Matthews.

“Obviously he’s on the first line, I’m going to have to prove myself to be able to play with a player like that. But that’s my goal,” McKenna said. “I think he’s a special player. If I got the opportunity to play with him– I think my game is obviously being a playmaker, and he’s a shooter– I think we could complement each other pretty well. But like I said, I’ve got to work towards that, and that’s my goal.”

Leafs Extremely Busy During July 1st Free Agency Signing Period

Leafs management was highly aggressive during the July 1st  free agent signing season as Chayka put his stamp on the Leafs by making several key free agent signings  with the biggest being the signing  of two-time Vezina Trophy winner, 37 year-old goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.

It was on the first day of Free Agency when Chayka made front page news by swinging for the fences in signing Bobrovsky, who is also a two-time Stanley Cup champion to a three-year deal worth $21 million.

Bobrovsky, who sits seventh on the  NHL’s all-time goalie wins list with 456, brings a winning pedigree to the Leafs along with veteran wisdom. He will be paired up with his former Florida Panthers teammate goalie Anthony Stolarz who will once again serve as Bobrovsky’s back up.

Besides brining in an established sure Hall of Famer starting goaltender, the Leafs also signed forwards Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger along with inking Brandon Duhaime and trading goalie Dennis Hildeby to the Tampa Bay Lightning for scrappy forward Nick Paul.

“We feel a lot better about our center position through the defence,” Chayka said. “Our portfolio in goal, we feel great about. So any time you can enter a season feeling better about the spine, that makes you feel like you’ve got a baseline that you can build off.’

Leafs fans can expect some more roster moves before training camp opens in September.
