2026 NBA Finals Preview and Prediction

The Tale of the Tape: Clash of Styles

This championship series represents a true basketball contrast. The Spurs, anchored by generational talent Victor Wembanyama, features a methodical, defensive-minded approach that recently survived a grueling seven-game Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. On the other side, the Knicks are rolling. After sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the East, New York rides an impressive 11-game playoff winning streak into the Finals. While San Antonio utilizes a highly versatile, perimeter-oriented attack built around spacing, the Knicks prioritize a physical, half-court grind with heavy isolation and paint dominance, which will be put to the test against the length of Wembanyama.

The Headliner: Wembanyama vs. Brunson

Every Finals series hinges on its superstars, and this matchup is no exception. Wembanyama, named the Western Conference Finals MVP, is an offensive and defensive nightmare. His length alters everything at the rim and forces opponents into difficult rotations. Meanwhile, Brunson has been the ultimate floor general and clutch scorer for New York. Averaging near the top of the playoffs in scoring, Brunson’s ability to navigate tight spaces and shoot from the mid-range will be severely tested by San Antonio’s perimeter defense.

The X-Factor: Castle’s Defensive Gravity

A major key to this series will be how San Antonio deploys guard Stephon Castle. Castle has proven to be an elite perimeter defender during this postseason run. If he can disrupt Brunson’s rhythm or force him to operate away from his favorite spots on the floor, it will tilt the series heavily in San Antonio’s favor. New York also has several potential x-factors in OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges. If Wembanyama and Brunson both absolutely dominate this series, it could ultimately be how the other guys perform that will determine who wins this series.

The Frontcourt Battle

The interior matchup will define the offensive flow. With Karl-Anthony Towns stretching the floor for the Knicks, the Spurs’ big men will be pulled out of the paint, which could open driving lanes for New York’s athletic wings. However, San Antonio’s seasons veterans, like De’Aaron Fox, provide crucial playmaking and steady hands to prevent the young Spurs squad from panicking during high-pressure Finals moments.

Betting Odds and Championship Prediction

Las Vegas has installed the Spurs as a clear favorite where they currently sit at -194, with the red-hot Knicks entering as underdogs at +162. While San Antonio’s versatility and Wembanyama’s rim dominance give them a slight edge on paper, the Knicks have looked completely unstoppable for the majority of these playoffs.

Prediction: Knicks in 6. I believe that these teams are more evenly matched than most people believe, so I love the value that is offered for the Knicks. Their efficiency is incredible right now and they match up about as well as any team can against Wembanyama. The size and physicality of Anunoby, Bridges and Towns should also be able to disrupt San Antonio’s dribble penetration.

New York has already proven that they can get points in the paint against elite rim protection and they have heavily outrebounded their opponents. The Spurs are admittedly the toughest test they have had in this postseason by far, but I expect the Knicks to find a way to pull off the upset and close out the series at home in Madison Square Garden.
