The New York Mets now own again the worst record in the MLB, which might force them to bring up a top Mets prospect. The Mets would go on to win three straight, including the series against the Los Angeles Angels and Colorado Rockies. However, the Mets would see a failure from their offense and a horrible outing from the 37-year old Craig Kimbrel. The Mets took an early 2-0 lead before allowing the game to be tied in the bottom of the 6th inning. Christian Scott in his 3rd start struck out six and walked two, allowing only one earned run.
However, that didn’t stop Kimbrel from allowing two singles and a walk, which was then followed by a go-ahead grand slam by Jake McCarthy. Now, the Mets must wonder if calling on a certain prospect could help them.
The Mets Lineup Vs. Lefties Is Horrible
Reason number one for a call-up is the atrocious lineup against left-handers. The Mets have Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr., Jorge Polanco, and Ronny Mauricio all on the IL, leading to some otherwise bad lineups against lefties. Three of the those four players are switch-hitters, with Robert Jr. being a right-handed batter. This has led to consistently having Austin Slater, Andy Ibanez, Tyrone Taylor, and even Vidal Brujan in the lineup.
To put it simply, that is beyond atrocious, as Brujan, Ibanez, and Slater wouldn’t even sniff the lineup of other good teams in the MLB. The prospect, A.J. Ewing isn’t a right-handed bat, but he is a high-average bat, which would help New York a lot. The problem is too that the only bat that has even been remotely good is Slater’s, who got DFA’d by the Miami Marlins and is so far hitting .417 with the Mets. Calling up a top Mets prospect might make sense.
Mets Prospect Ewing Has Been Scorching Hot In Triple-A
The 21-year old small shortstop, Ewing, a high Mets prospect, was actually just recently called up to Triple-A. However, in Triple-A, Ewing in nine games has a .364 average, three RBIs, four walks, and only three strikeouts. Ewing recently got a walk-off hit that has made his case even more interesting. Ewing hit .315 last season in the minor leagues, which is obviously amazing. However, in 2026, Ewing is now hitting .354, which is obviously even better.
It might be a bit early for a move, but the Mets offense or lack or there of is concerning, and mixing that with the abundance of injuries they have could give New York no choice but to do something drastic. Calling up Ewing could be that move.
The Mets Need to Do One Thing Though…
If Carlos Mendoza wants to get fired, then please do sent out a lineup that includes Slater, Ibanez, Brujan, and Taylor. It is as simple as that, that just stinks. Nobody really cares if the Mets are facing left-handed pitching, there is no excuse to sit Carson Benge and MJ Melendez when both were absolutely crushing the ball before that. Even then, Mendoza also decided to sit Bret Baty, who isn’t the best player, but at the end of the day is better than all of the other guys Mendoza sent out.
It is a normal thing to send out right-handed batters to face lefties. However, it is clear the Mets don’t have the luxury to do that. New York cannot be sending out three players who have gotten DFA’d recently and for good reason. Melendez was hitting .333. Benge has hit homers in the last few weeks and is seeing his batting average go up. And finally, Baty deserves at-bats against lefties.
At the end of the day, the Mets probably won’t call up Ewing. Ewing is 21 and doesn’t have much power. However, if the Mets cannot find a spark for the offense, then they may have no choice. Mendoza did decide to put out that spark with such an abysmal lineup though.
