Micah Parsons is being traded to the Green Bay Packers in a blockbuster deal to kick off the NFL season and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones feels they are a better team after the trade.
Micah Parsons Traded to Packers
The Dallas Cowboys have traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for two first-round picks and Kenny Clark. In return, Parsons will sign a four-year $188 million deal with the Packers. The trade makes the Green Bay Packers immediate Super Bowl contenders.
Parsons and the Cowboys have been the talk of the NFL offseason as Parsons sought a contract extension, as the 2025 season will be the last season of his rookie deal. Players of Parsons’ caliber don’t usually get traded; they normally work things out with the team that drafted them, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
Jerry Jones Believes Cowboys Will Be Better in the Long Run
Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones talked all season about wanting to extend Parsons, but weirdly wanted to do it on his terms. Jones states that during this offseason, he and Parsons had negotiated a contract that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL; however, there was only one problem with that. Jones refused to engage with Parsons’ agent to get a deal done and believed that he and Parsons could get a deal done with Parsons’ representation available, which caused friction between the two parties.
At the beginning of August, Parsons requested the trade after extension talks got nowhere. Jones refuted that they would trade Parsons, saying it would take a Godfather offer to get rid of him. Thursday afternoon, NFL insiders reported that the Cowboys would be entertaining offers for Parsons, and soon thereafter, after he was traded to the Packers.
After speaking to the media about the trade, Jones mentioned his appreciation for Parsons but said the trade was by design.
“This was all by design,” Jones said to the media. “I made Micah an offer but it wasn’t acceptable and I honored the fact that it wasn’t done in the way that he wanted to do It through an agent. There is no vindictiveness. There is no bad feelings on our part that we couldn’t come to an agreement.”
Also, during the press conference, Jones mentioned that the Cowboys want to get better at stopping the run and believes Clark can help them with that this season. He also mentioned that the Cowboys could win more going forward rather than had they extended Parsons. Jones also mentioned that they should not rule out the Cowboys using the extra first-round picks; they have to go get another player that may be available via trade around the league.
The Packers Become Immediate Super Bowl Contenders
The Packers become immediate Super Bowl contenders after trading for Parsons. Parsons is one of two NFL players all-time to have at least 12 sacks in each of his first four seasons in the NFL. In his short career, Parsons has been a four-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time All-Pro selection. He is easily one of the best players in the entire NFL. Last season, the Packers’ defense was among the league leaders in takeaways. With Parsons in the fold, the Packers should have even more opportunities to take the ball away from their opponents.
