It’s no secret that boxing needs something like this, and here’s a few reasons it might become a reality.
No Big Names
Boxing arguably falls short when it comes to everyday household names. In fact, Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather himself are the only two big names in the sport. On the other hand, McGregor has established himself as one of MMA’s premier superstars as a double weight class champion.
Let’s face it, sports fans aren’t about to cough up 60 dollars for a fight with names no ones heard of.
Money Talks
The money numbers between Pacquiao and Mayweather were astronomical but the reason for that was name recognition. A fight with McGregor will draw a large portion of the MMA fan base that will see him to just to watch his boxing ability.
Must see television, more importantly it will be must see “pay per view” television.
Entertainment Value
Both of these men are entertainers and promoters in their own right, and pretty good at it too.
While I stated earlier that fans will pay to see an interesting matchup, they’ll also pay to see one of these two get their face caved in. Mayweather and McGregor are two of the most polarizing sports figures today.
Arrogant, flamboyant, flashy, and more importantly, incredibly skilled are the words that come to mind when describing these two athletes. It’s their skill at promoting themselves that’s allowed something like this to garner so much attention and anticipation in the first place.
