Week 6 was stunning yet again, and many losses that NO ONE predicted occurred. These losses may have crushed the very hopes and dreams of teams. Here are the top 3 losses that absolutely left the college football world in shock, or a team in emergency mode.
Chaos Around College Football in Week 6
Â
No. 3 Miami (5-0) 28-22 No. 18 Florida State (3-2)
Perhaps not surprising was the loss suffered by the Florida State Seminoles. However, the Noles just two weeks ago were hoping for another Alabama-like game on Saturday night. First, FSU lost to the Virginia Cavs 46-38 in 2nd OT, and now, FSU may have lost everything in their 6-point loss against the Miami Hurricanes. Now, Florida State sits at 3-2 and probably needs seven straight wins to sniff the college football playoff.
This game was also much more dominated by Miami than it looked, with Florida State scoring the “look what I can do but didn’t” touchdown with 3 minutes left. FSU needs more from Tommy Castellano’s arm and more from their defense. This is definitely not where FSU imagined they would be after their first three games, which were electric.
No. 9 Texas (3-2) 21-29 Florida (2-3)
After another loss, the Texas Longhorns are somehow writing the definition of overrated. Why does this loss hurt even more? Texas was ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation to begin the season, with Arch Manning, a once-in-a-generation talent, at the starting quarterback position. The Longhorns are now 3-2, with this loss being severely embarrassing, as it comes against the struggling 2-3 Florida Gators. Texas has been okay on the defensive side of the ball, but on the offense, the Longhorns have looked atrocious.
DJ Lagway finally came alive as Florida kind of dominated Texas en route to their 8-point win. Manning threw for two TDs but also two interceptions, and he fumbled the ball on the final possession of the game. For Billy Napier, this win could save his career. For Steve Sarkisian, it is starting to look very bleak. Texas will now have to face the defensively amazing Oklahoma Sooners. A loss there will mean the end of all of Texas’s hopes and dreams.
No. 7 Penn State (3-2) 37-42 UCLA (1-4)

The most embarrassing loss of James Franklin’s tenure, for sure. On college gameday, previously, Kirk Herbstreit was asked how many losses Penn State would suffer this season. Kirk turned a blind eye to most games, stating that UCLA, Northwestern, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Rutgers were basically nothing, and that they would be 10-2. Funnily enough, one of the worst teams of the FBS so far, UCLA, which was a 24-point underdog, found a way to murder the Nittany Lions in front of the nation.
Now, PSU is terrified to play any team. UCLA jumped out to an early 10-0 lead with a quick TD and then recovered an onside kick before a field goal. PSU responded with a TD, before UCLA shut up PSU in the first half, leading 27-7 at the half. PSU quickly made it 21-27 with a TD and then a blocked punt TD. However, Nico Iamaleava and Co. drove down the field to make it 34-21. PSU and UCLA traded punches to make 42-35 before PSU failed to convert on the UCLA 9 on a 4th down. UCLA then allowed a meaningless safety, winning 37-42.
For Penn State, it is the ugliest loss they have suffered for a long time. Now, it feels more like a 6-6 or worse season than a 12-0 season. Overall, the season isn’t over for these teams. But for each team, a miracle may need to happen to revive the season. Especially for Texas and Penn State, who now find themselves unranked. The season for these teams is in emergency mode. For PSU, though, it is just in “please don’t look at me” mode. What a week of college football.
