The 2019 NFL draft is only a few days away and teams are looking to see who they will add to their roster for the upcoming season. It is crucial for all teams to hit on their draft picks in order to properly improve their team. This draft is heavy on defensive talent, but teams who need offensive players will not shy away from taking who they feel they need. This is my second attempt at a 2019 NFL mock draft.
Derek Borycki’s 2019 NFL Mock Draft 2.0
1. Arizona Cardinals: Nick Bosa DE, Ohio State
The Cardinals have been rumored to take Kyler Murray with the first pick, but getting Bosa is a safer move. Josh Rosen has not given the Cardinals a reason to give up on him and they shouldn’t either. Bosa is the most talented player in the draft and deserves to be selected first overall.
2. San Francisco 49ers: Josh Allen EDGE, Kentucky
Allen has risen up the board since he originally declared for the draft. Allen is a versatile edge rusher who can play in multiple schemes. He would excel in a 3-4 coming off the edge but could be a successful 4-3 pass rusher in San Francisco.
3. New York Jets: Quinnen Williams DT, Alabama
Williams is an interesting player. He wasn’t dominant his entire college career, but he was when it mattered the most. Williams exploded with talent his final season at Alabama. Now, Williams is consistently in all top five conversations.
4. Oakland Raiders: Kyler Murray QB, Oklahoma
After not being selected by the Cardinals Kyler’s next chance is in Oakland. Another team with a quarterback many would deem a starting caliber player who is enamored with Murray. Unlike Kliff Kingsbury, Jon Gruden makes sure he gets his own QB. Murray had a fantastic career in Oklahoma leading to a Heisman Trophy. Starting his NFL career with Antonio Brown will help him a lot.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Devin White LB, LSU
White is an outstanding linebacker and would possibly go higher than fifth in a draft class that was less front-loaded like this year. White dominated backfields for LSU and showed that LSU can produce more than receivers and corners. Tampa Bay lost Kwon Alexander to the 49ers this off-season and White could easily replace him.
6. New York Giants: Dwayne Haskins QB, Ohio State
The Giants need to address the quarterback situation before it is too late. Eli Manning is only getting older and hasn’t performed at a high level in recent seasons. The Giants have young weapons around on their offense at most positions except for quarterback. Haskins would be a great option for the Giants when Eli retires.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jawaan Taylor OT, Florida
Jacksonville thought they had their offensive line figured out after the last off-season. They signed Andrew Norwell and drafted Cam Robinson and looked set at the position group. Now, Jacksonville needs another tackle to anchor the outside of their line. Taylor is the perfect fit for the Jaguars. Taylor can play outside for Jacksonville and hopefully last longer than Luke Joeckel did for them.
8. Detroit Lions: Rashan Gary DT, Michigan
Detroit has needed interior defensive lineman since they lost Suh and Fairley. They have attempted to patch the hole various times such as signing Haloti Ngata. They drafted A’Shawn Robinson, who is a talented player, but need that dominant inside presence like they had in Suh. Gary will provide them with that dominant presence.
9. Buffalo Bills: Ed Oliver DT, Houston
At one point many considered Oliver to be the consensus number one pick in this draft. Attitude issues and injury concerns hurt those thoughts, but after a fantastic performance at the combine and his pro day, Oliver is back in top 10 conversations. Buffalo needs the same dominant presence that Detroit needs inside and Oliver would be perfect for them.
10. Denver Broncos: Drew Lock QB, Missouri
The Denver Broncos need to find a long-term solution at quarterback and Lock might be their answer. Denver acquired Joe Flacco to lea their offense after Case Keenum failed to do so last season. Flacco isn’t young and has already been dethroned by one rookie in Lamar Jackson. Flacco will need to play well to keep Lock on the sidelines in his rookie season.
11. Cincinnati Bengals: Jonah Williams OT, Alabama
Cincinnati has seemed to be playing with the idea of drafting a quarterback in the first round, but a day two selection seems more likely with Andy Dalton still on the roster. Williams could add some much-needed help to the Bengals offensive line and help get Joe Mixon more involved in the offense.
12. Green Bay Packers: T.J. Hockenson TE, Iowa
The Packers have had issues finding the right tight end for Aaron Rodgers. Most recently, Jimmy Graham was called on to try and fill the spot. Now, the Packers have the chance to draft a young dominant tight end who Rodgers can mold into his own weapon that he can use the rest of his career. Hockenson is an all-around tight end who can definitely find success in the passing game.
13. Miami Dolphins: Daniel Jones QB, Duke
Miami traded Ryan Tannehill to Tennessee this off-season and signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to be their starting quarterback. These moves seem to signify they are in a rebuilding mode. The best way for them to start is to select a quarterback to build their team around. Jones has had flashes of greatness but will need some time to develop. Miami is a perfect destination for Jones because there isn’t a need to play before he’s ready and Ryan Fitzpatrick is reliable enough to hold the spot until he is ready.
14. Atlanta Falcons: Brian Burns DE, Florida State
The Falcons have had some solid players on the ends of their defensive line over the yeard and Burns would add to that list. His skills speak for themselves and he would add a huge advantage to the Falcons defense to have such depth at such a crucial position.
15. Washington Redskins: Marquise Brown WR, Oklahoma
The Redskins are dealing with their quarterback situation one step at a time, but for now, they are rolling with Case Keenum. Keenum led the Vikings to a playoff run just two seasons previous and with the right weapons could possibly do the same in Washington. Brown is a speedster who plays similar to Tyreek Hill in Kansas City. Brown would be a great addition to the offense for Case Keenum.
16. Carolina Panthers: Byron Murphy CB, Washington
The Panthers have been in need of a number one corner since Josh Norman. Murphy is similar to Norman in terms of style. Like Norman, Murphy is an extremely talented zone coverage cornerback. Murphy will help the Panthers’ secondary immensely.
17. New York Giants: Clelin Ferrell DE, Clemson
The Giants lost Olivier Vernon in a trade to Cleveland this off-season. They replace him with a solid player in Ferrell. A successful career at Clemson gives Ferrell high expectations at the next level.
18. Minnesota Vikings: Andre Dillard OT, Washington State
The Vikings continue to build their offense with a great pick in Dillard. Dillard performs well in the passing game and will help Kirk Cousins get back on track in 2019.
19. Tennessee Titans: Christian Wilkins DT, Clemson
The Titans could use Wilkins presence inside on their defense. Tennessee has solid pieces on offense so defense is their best option here.
20. Pittsburgh Steelers: Greedy Williams CB, LSU
The Steelers need a cornerback badly. Williams had an impressive career at LSU and his film shows that he has NFL talent. Williams will be a solid addition to the Steelers defense while their offense figures out its new identity.
21. Seattle Seahawks: Chris Lindstrom OG, Boston College
Lindstrom has risen into the first round conversation with consistent performances throughout the draft process. Pairing these with his film from Boston College and Lindstrom has shown to be a top offensive lineman in this draft class. Seattle needs help on the interior offensive line, which Lindstrom will help improve.
22. Baltimore Ravens: D.K. Metcalf WR, Ole Miss
The Ravens have lost a few of their top receivers from last season this off-season. They lost John Brown to the Buffalo Bills through free agency and they released Michael Crabtree. Metcalf has been a hot topic this draft season with his big frame and high-level release skills. Metcalf is a big receiver that would be great to have with a young quarterback leading the offense.
23. Houston Texans: Cody Ford OT, Oklahoma
Ford is most likely going to play on the interior in the NFL. He has good size for an interior lineman and has great athleticism. His power could improve, but he showed at Oklahoma he can block for quarterbacks who can run.
24. Oakland Raiders: Montez Sweat DE, Mississippi State
Sweat has been falling down boards due to a health issue that threatens his ability to play. Oakland showed last season with Maurice Hurst that they will take this exact risk for a player with elite-level talent. If Oakland does take the chance on Sweat, it will certainly pay off for them.
25. Philadelphia Eagles: Deandre Baker CB, Georgia
The Eagles have needed help at cornerback for a while. They often find themselves with injuries at the position and could use more talent at the position as a whole. Baker can start as a second or third option for the Eagles and become their number one corner in no time.
26. Indianapolis Colts: A.J. Brown WR, Ole Miss
The Colts have struggled to find a compliment to T.Y. Hilton. A.J. Brown would be a fantastic option for the Colts. Brown led the way at Ole Miss and a backup role to Hilton would allow him to perfect his skills and be a great piece to Andrew Luck‘s offense.
27. Oakland Raiders: Josh Jacobs RB, Alabama
The Raiders need a young running back who can shoulder a big load for a long time. Someone to develop chemistry with their young players on offense. Jacobs has shown the skills to be considered the best running back in this draft class.
28. Los Angeles Chargers: Jeffery Simmons DT, Mississippi State
Simmons was originally a potential top-five pick before an ACL tear scared NFL teams. He has been recovering well and ACL injuries, while still very important and potentially career changing, are less feared as they were in the past. Simmons is still a dominant interior lineman who will wreak havoc in the NFL.
29. Kansas City Chiefs: Johnathan Abram S, Mississippi State
Abram is a solid safety who will look to replace Eric Berry in Kansas City. Abram recorded 99 tackles in his final season at Mississippi State. This would be the third Mississippi State defensive player taken in the first round.
30. Green Bay Packers: Devin Bush LB, Michigan
The Packers have completely revamped their linebacker position. They parted ways with their long-time legend Clay Matthews and signed two talented linebackers. Blake Martinez is coming off a 144 tackle season and Green Bay is looking like their front seven will be well off. Adding Bush would put a stamp on their linebacking corps for good and would allow one of their outside linebackers to potentially play on the edge.
31. Los Angeles Rams: Garrett Bradbury C, NC State
The Rams are loaded with talent at almost every position with a mix of young and old talent. They have been aggressive with trades and the signing of veteran players who still have something to offer a team with a good chance of making it to the super bowl. The offensive line is a position where you can never have too much depth and Bradbury is a fantastic player and a great addition for the Rams.
32. New England Patriots: Noah Fant TE, Iowa
Rob Gronkowski has officially retired and Tom Brady needs a new tight end. They have made some signings to fill the position out, but Fant is a fantastic receiving tight end who can help replace the void left by Gronk’s retirement.
