Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon has recently asked to receive an extension on his contract or a trade to another team. The Buffalo Bills would be a fantastic landing spot for Gordon if the Chargers decide to trade him. Gordon has emerged as a top running back in the NFL over the last three seasons. His touchdown production is top tier with 38 total touchdowns over those three seasons.
The Bills have revamped their backfield this off-season, but Gordon would be an extreme increase in the talent level of the group. His youth combined with his talent makes him a top target for teams looking for a running back. Here are four reasons why the Buffalo Bills should trade for Melvin Gordon.
Why The Buffalo Bills Should Trade for Melvin Gordon
Youth
The Bills’ running backs were at one point the oldest group in the NFL before signing T.J. Yeldon and drafting Devin Singletary. Gordon would add youth to the starting core of the group with LeSean McCoy a likely piece in the trade. McCoy is now in his thirties and Gordon is only 26. McCoy has been productive for Buffalo since being traded in 2015 for Kiko Alonso, however, his production of recent is not comparative to Gordon’s in LA.
Complete the Offense
The Bills spent the majority of the 2019 off-season rebuilding their offense. They added multiple starting-caliber players to the offensive line and at wide receiver. They also added multiple running backs to the roster, but neither Frank Gore nor T.J. Yeldon is at the level of Melvin Gordon. Gordon would create a legitimate threat out of the Bills’ running game and create more opportunities for Josh Allen in the passing game.
Star Power
The Bills are not one of the NFL’s premier franchises and the players on the team are often overlooked. In the new Madden NFL 20 video game, Buffalo is one of two teams without a player rated in the nineties. Buffalo has multiple players who are capable of playing at an elite level including cornerback Tre’Davious White.
Players in Buffalo often struggle to create a household name for themselves unless they create it prior to arriving in Buffalo like LeSean McCoy. Gordon is already a household name and is considered one of the NFL’s best running backs. His name on Buffalo’s roster would help increase the recognition of the other talented players on Buffalo’s roster.
Production
The Bills have had mild success running the football in recent times. LeSean McCoy had his worst statistical season in 2018 and will look to bounce back this season. However, McCoy is now 31 and his time in Buffalo has shown that he might be regressing. Running backs have short career spans and their prime seasons can come and go, so Buffalo might want to consider moving on from McCoy before it is too late.
Is He The Future?
Melvin Gordon would be a perfect option. He is in need of a new contract, so Buffalo could acquire Gordon and extend him quickly. This would avoid the position of becoming a problem after McCoy’s time in Buffalo ends. Also, Gordon would be a great player to help Devin Singletary develop into a potential starter himself.
