Where Has the Magic Gone for the Los Angeles Lakers?

Do You Believe In Magic?

When you hear the name Magic Johnson, the first things that come to mind is Lakers legend, HIV survivor, business mogul, and the list goes on and on. Another thing you could tack on to his resume is President Of Basketball Operations for the Los Angles Lakers. On February 21st, 2017, Jim Buss brother of Jeanie Buss (owner of the Los Angeles Lakers) and son of the late Dr. Jerry Buss was fired as President of Basketball Operations. Johnson was immediately hired. Before hiring Johnson, he had been very critical of Jim Buss buss via social media, claiming Buss had been doing a bad with the Los Angeles Lakers and that a change was needed.

A Bold Proclamation

Once Johnson was hired for the position, there was joy throughout the city, the organization, and the fan-base. One of the greatest Lakers to ever play the game is walking into the office. A five-time champion and hall of famer, someone who knows the game and knows how to win would be helping the Lakers. Johnson being Johnson only knew how to do this one way with flash. With that, he made a very bold proclamation once he got the job “If I can’t deliver, I’ll step down myself,” by saying that he had given himself a two-year window and get something done and get the Lakers to where they belong. A seemingly tall task but with the confidence and swagger Johnson had it didn’t seem impossible for him. He managed to deliver bringing in Lebron James but failed to build a winning team. the ending result the Lakers secured another losing record ending all playoff hopes.

What Happens Now

Magic Johnson in typical Magic Johnson fashion grabbed headlines again. With a stunning announcement, Johnson stepped down from the role of president of basketball operations. He did so without even notifying Jeanie Buss of his decision. Leaving everyone stunned and scratching their heads in confusion. All we can do now is speculate why he left and what’s next for the Lakers. Some names circling out there as a replacement are Jerry West, Bob Myers, and Masai Ujiri even current general manager Rob Pelinka. Those candidates have a very healthy experience with the role, which is something Johnson lacked. Another name that so happens to be floating around is Miami Heat’s own team president, Pat Riley. Though he has denied any rumors and speculations, perhaps one of those candidates is the key to getting the Lakers back, but one thing is for certain the Lakers are going to need magic of some kind in order to get them back on track.
