The Major League Baseball regular season kicked off Sunday and Monday. Game 1 of 162 is done and over with. Here are the Top Performers from this year’s Opening Day.
Top Performers From Baseball’s Opening Day
C: Jeff Mathis, Arizona Diamondbacks
Mathis, more known for his defense, stepped up on offense for the Diamondbacks Sunday afternoon. Mathis picked up three hits, two of which were for extra bases; a double and a triple. This is a good start to the season for the 12th year veteran catcher.
1B: Mark Reynolds, Colorado Rockies
Reynolds has always been an offensive powerhouse. Put him in a hitter friendly atmosphere in Colorado, and he should flourish. He began his 2017 season the right way as he picked up two hits; a double and a home run, and three RBI’s.
2B: Rougned Odor, Texas Rangers
Odor put up some huge power numbers last season, hitting 33 home runs and 33 doubles. He picked up right where he left off in the as he hit two home runs in his first two at-bats of the 2017 season.
SS: Eduardo Nunez, San Francisco Giants
Nunez was a box score stuffer on Opening Day. He went 3-for-4 with a double. He also drove in a run, scored a run, and stole two bases.
3B: Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays
Longoria will be the main focus of the Tampa Bay offense this season. For them to have a big year, he needs to have a big year. He did just that on Opening Day as he teed off on Masahiro Tanaka and the Yankees. Longo went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and a line drive two run homer.
OF: Khris Davis, Oakland Athletics
Davis continued to be the power bat in the middle of the Oakland lineup. He opened the season the only way he know how to. He went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI’s.
SP: Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants
MadBum is just a freak of a ball player. He threw five perfect innings on the mound before allowing a baserunner. The big righty ended up lasting seven innings and allowed three runs but struck out eleven. Perhaps the most impressive thing Bumgarner did all day was hitting two home runs at the plate. He set the record for most Opening Day home runs by a pitcher in MLB history.
