As free agency continues, signings are blossoming this week. Since Saturday, Willy Adames, Juan Soto, Max Fried, Nathan Eovaldi, Tyler O’Neill, and more have signed. However, Pete Alonso remains. For some reason, many teams don’t seem interested in Alonso, despite him being quickly one of the best offensive players in the league.
Three Teams Who could Sign Pete Alonso
First, Stats
Many others have claimed that Alonso’s stats are diminishing, falling, and more. However, the 30-year-old deserves a lot more respect. Since 2019, Alonso ranks second in homers, sixth in extra-base hits, first in RBIs, 15th in walks, second in games played, and lastly, is averaging over 40 homers since his debut. Sure, Alonso had 12 fewer homers than in 2023. However, he still has more hits and got on base more than he did in 2023. And, if one hasn’t learned, Alonso can bounce back. He can be a significant difference for many teams competing in 2025.
Seattle Mariners
The poor Seattle Mariners had one of the most embarrassing seasons ever. After having a 10-game lead in their division, they lost the AL West to the Houston Astros anyway. The Mariners were the best team for pitching in 2024, which might lead one to think they would be great. However, the Mariners complemented their pitching with the second-worst hitting. The Mariners lacked extra-base hits and right-handed power, something Alonso would fix majorly. Their first baseman this season, Ty France, would be easy to ditch for a much better Alonso.
Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals struggled mightily with hitting. They had average hitting, but they ranked just 29th in the power department. Alonso would be a great get for a team that has had some bad luck with large contracts. Combine Alonso with top prospects and young hitters, and you might have a pretty good team in 2025. In addition, the Nationals could be a great team in a few years if they can build around their young core and Alonso. The question is, for Washington, is this a waste of money? If he signs there, Alonso’s best years with the Nationals may be in the middle of a rebuild, so saving money for a better time is not a horrible option.
New York Mets
If Alonso signs with the New York Mets, which seems likely thanks to a lot of uninterest in Alonso, the Mets could become the most fantastic Met team ever. With Juan Soto, the Mets know that the World Series is easily within reach. Why:
- Francisco Lindor
- Juan Soto
- Pete Alonso
- Mark Vientos
- Brandon Nimmo
- Starling Marte
- Jose Siri/Tyrone Taylor
- Francisco Alvarez
- Luisangel Acuna
This is a terrifying lineup that starts with four superstars and is followed by several players who could become superstars. The Mets would be wise to use their money where they need it. If New York is going to trade for expensive Nolan Arenado, then the Mets might as well sign him. There is NO reason not to resign the Polar Bear.
Alonso deserves more respect and could make a significant difference on many teams. Whether that be his original team or another team, Alonso is a player to get in free agency.
